The Copy Protection System in the PlayStation

Did you know the original PlayStation used the laser tracking system of optical disc formats to tell a real disc from a fake?  When I learned about this system, I thought it was really clever.  But over an argument at lunchtime in high school, I devised a "system" Sony could have used to make disc copying virtually impossible.

The black layer initially made no difference, but there's a rumor that later models checked for it.

You should comment that on the YT page!

"The first commercially successful game console to use the compact disc..." What a polite way to say "haha suck it NEC, Sega, Amiga CDTV and 3D0".

Better solution, sounds weird, hear me out: *ehem* LP, player armature Copy Protection via nobody wanting to tote around LPs in 1996 Boom, by that point, your profit margins should be in the tens, if not dozens of dollars.

I decided not to include a demo for fear of being seen as promoting the practice. Also, I tried at least a dozen times and couldn't pull it off!

would be nice to see a demo disc swapping trick successfully loading the burned copy

In a way, the DVL-700 in my last video was such a player!

I would hate to imagine seeing all sorts of different sized CDs, although the possibility of a "universal disc player", much like a universal remote, with a giant disc tray containing all sorts of slots in it sounds intriguing.
