POD 138: Three perspectives on 7-hydroxymitragynine

In this episode I describe my own impressions on the multibillion dollar industry that has emerged around the new-ish opioid 7-hydroxymitragynine and speak with two industry insiders, Soren Shade who works as a kratom leaf vendor and policy reformer and Dr. Ahmed Alford who has studied the chemistry and pharmacology of natural Kratom alkaloids and their synthetic derivatives and has worked with the 7-hydroxymitragynine grey market.

POD 136: [VIDEO] Patrick Phillips on the Japanese conspiracy to distribute opium laced cigarettes in China

In this episode I talk with tobacco researcher Patrick Phillips about his new book "Tobacco of the Emperor" which investigates the history of Japanese cigarettes and other tobacco products. We discuss historical claims of etorphine-laced cigarettes, the opium wars, and the curiously under-researched (at least in English?) claim that millions of Chinese people were tricked into opiate addition with opium-laced Golden Bat cigarettes.

POD 135: [VIDEO] Listening to psychedelic clinical trial participants with Becca Kacanda

In this episode I talk with MAPS phase III trial participant Becca Kacanda about her experience successfully treating PTSD with MDMA psychotherapy. The conversation covers the complexity of psychedelic psychotherapy, the importance of listening to the participants directly, and what it was like to be manipulated by Psymposia-associate Sasha Sisko who attempted to convince her that the therapy she had received was "whack-a-doodle nonsense ‘therapy.'" We also discuss her involvement with diff...

POD 130: BREAKING MDMA CRL with Dr. Rick Doblin

In this interview with Dr. Rick Doblin (almost one year after the last interview) we discuss the recent release of the (formerly) private letter the FDA sent to Lykos after the rejection of MDMA, which provides some additional insight into the FDA's motivations for rejecting MDMA as well as the role that Psymposia played. We also discuss the ongoing threats I'm receiving from Sarlo lawyers (attached) the very same people who funded Psymposia.

Synthesizing Ariadne in Alexander Shulgin's Lab

Last fall, The Shulgin Foundation invited me to film the synthesis of some compounds in Alexander Shulgin's lab in an effort to teach the public about about Shulgin's chemistry. Over two days I filmed the synthesis of ariadne and DiPT (still unfinished) and made this short doc about the experience. The final proton NMR is posted after the end credits, yield of the recrystallized HCl salt was about 80%. I plan to reupload with some adjustments to the sound mix (and possibly update the diagrams...

Additionally we discuss a fungus that was found on a sample of a nitropropene in Shulgin's lab (currently being cultured by Alan Rockefeller), indole diterpenes, the kykeon, and the role of psychoactive alkaloids in soil ecology. The first LSD synthesis video? A response.

Late last year mushroom educator Willy Myco released one of the strangest and most provocative chemistry videos I've ever seen, an apparent LSD synthesis tutorial filmed in Pakistan. Despite the video's ambitions—it reportedly cost $100,000 to produce—I strongly suspect that no LSD was synthesized, due to what appear to be fatal procedural and stoichiometric errors. I do not think this attempt was fraudulent, I strongly suspect it is real, which is what makes the video so interesting. I g...
