Next Time on Returner’s Defiance 4
Added 2025-01-23 07:00:03 +0000 UTCAll over the world, people noticed the ground quaking. A research team in Antarctica, the people on the streets in Bangladesh, the city workers of Denmark, the fishermen in the Atlantic, the workers in Russia, the bazaar-goers in Angola, and those in the heart of Australia all looked around.
Everyone turned to the massive disruption around them. The steady rumble built and built, until a swirling red energy pierced up into the sky. It shot up from the ground, tearing anything in its path asunder, banishing the clouds above and spreading the red light as if crowding out the beautiful blue sky.
In Bangladesh, the busy street had suddenly stopped. Crowds stared at the red beam, only to then stare into the middle distance in front of them. Many of them began swiping into the air, waving their hands, while some of the younger people gently reached out and began to tap the air in front of them.
Only those closest to the red light didn't have time to bother with the system screen that appeared in front of them.
Horrifying shrieks echoed into the air. Cow-sized locusts shot from the bottom of the red beam, swooping down on anyone they could reach. People tried to swat away the monsters, but they were simply powerless as the creatures ripped through the populace like wet tissue paper.
The busy street turned into a panic as it turned into a river of blood.
In Antarctica, the research team fell on their backs as massive, looming juggernauts appeared from the red beam, trundling forward with clubs that must have weighed an entire ton.
Meanwhile, in Denmark, the beam appeared just outside the college campus. The students were out with their phones, beginning to take pictures as red armored forms with strange crimson tentacles wriggling underneath their helmets, walked out, chuckling as they stepped foot on Earth.
The students gawked, shouting at the demons, taking pictures, more concerned with being the first to post what they were seeing online than they were with staying alive.
The demons saw people flocking to them and only laughed with glee. Some of the human shells were bothering with the system windows, but so many weren't even paying attention.
The first demon stepped forward, grabbing a student and lifting them up by their face. Dark red tentacles shot out of the armor and pierced into the student, as they dug beneath their skin, causing the student to scream in agony.
Only then did the crowd finally begin to wake up from their daze. Many turned and tried to flee. Just as many fell to their knees in hopeless prayer.
The Rapture had come.

2025-01-23 20:19:41 +0000 UTCYes! Bran was not given time to build a team of more than a couple hundred and only one other clan (Heros) is even aware of the Rapture. So Earth will go from 100% human destruction to maybe 95-98% of humanity destroyed. Great job!?

2025-01-23 19:23:57 +0000 UTCI mean, who wouldn’t want to see the five clans and some sects coming out of the crowd and fighting the demons as soon as they appear? Unless the gates got moved, that’s what should be happening. Seems the ‘better’ only applies to Vein City.

2025-01-23 18:51:30 +0000 UTCOkay so, maybe include some cities in the final version… because while Antarctica doesn’t really have them (though it does have settlements), Denmark and Bangladesh are kinda big, and Australia is bloody huge! Also I hope this is a lot later in the next book because the days between the Rapture and the demons invading seem to have disappeared. Granted the number of days between has changed as many times as it’s been mentioned, but still SOME attempt at consistency and/or continuity would be much appreciated. I still mourn all this series could have been

2025-01-23 18:31:19 +0000 UTCYou are 100000000% correct! Everything special about RD was thrown away for a side quest

2025-01-23 17:02:16 +0000 UTCBruce said in his other post the rapture would start "after a touch of reintroducing the characters and giving Bran a mission." Hopefully that gives us the couple chapters of set up before the rapture. I'm still expecting Bran to travel and he at least has to travel to the clan.

2025-01-23 16:36:46 +0000 UTCDo we have a Bran stat sheet for the end of book 3?

2025-01-23 08:34:06 +0000 UTCThere are soooo many apocalypse stories where people now have to adjust to a “system” out there. Lots of death, confusion, denial etc. Yawn. The element that made RD different was the buildup to it. Now that is gone. It would have been interesting to see Bran’s preparations fully put into place. Now with the time skip in RD3, just more of the same I can find elsewhere.

2025-01-23 08:21:42 +0000 UTCI agree! The imagery is awesome and I'm curious if the book will start with the rapture, or if we'll have a least a prologue or first 2-3 chapters to cover the 2 weeks leading up to it?

2025-01-23 07:47:42 +0000 UTCI like that you jump to the Rapture, and some of the imagery was great. This chapter may need to go through editing a bit, but the imagery of the world and everyone on it waking up is amazing. As if the blue sky was just the tranquil dreaming of a restful titan, but now Earth is awake, and she woke up mean.
