Patreon Update 10-13-24
Added 2024-10-13 18:13:59 +0000 UTCHey Everyone
Thank you, everyone, for joining me on Ken's latest adventure. I believe it was a good book. As Ken continues to dive the dungeon, we're trying to retain the school aspect. It's a common flaw in all Academy-type books; the character often fights against the Academy trope because their growth constantly tries to escape the Academy's level.
Take Harry Potter, for example. It's the ultimate example of Academy events. School is a smaller and smaller part of the story, until you get to the end and it's almost completely abandoned except for setting.
We're in book seven, and we're having trouble keeping Ken within the frame of diving the Dungeon for school. So, I'm going to reset a little, use Star City as another place to return to an Academy vibe. It's all an effort to stay in the same archetype that the story started out as.
I also wanted to give Ken a visual upgrade. Most of my characters are first-person and written to be fairly easy self-inserts, as much as that is sometimes criticized.
However, I've been having trouble, once we started working on the webcomic, with the question of what Ken looks like.
Honestly, he was generic Japanese anime main character 101. The studio I worked with suggested making him a little more interesting.
So, as we get into the webcomic, Ken will probably take on some of his current white hair demonic appearance a little earlier. He will start that transformation with Dez's ritual that takes place in Book 1.
I wanted to do a bit of the same in this book and give Ken an update. This update will still eventually occur in the webcomic, but it will be less of a total change to more of a suddenly far more handsome Ken, and probably the eye change will be delayed for a little bit.
I am going to admit to slightly pulling back a little on Ken's liminal speed in the beginning of the book. I had started the book with the raid being a WoW Raid nostalgia rather than Ken Explodes All the Bosses on his first try. And it seems there was a little bit of the expectation wasn't quite there for the readers, so I'm probably going to go back and try and make sure I can set expectations.
Chris, who is my assistant, reads through the Patreon comments and correlates them. If a handful of you are all sort of talking about the same thing, he reports that to me. If you're reporting individual errors, he collects those, and on Monday mornings, he corrects them in the manuscript before they go off to their first round of editing.
It seems you guys really liked Ken's transformation. So maybe I need to make some of these self-insert main characters a little more visually recognizable.
Now we are switching, into Ard's Oath. I am working on chapter one right now, trying to get back into Ard's mental space.
We'll go into the war, which is always, kind of a tricky thing to write in fantasy. In fantasy, a war is something that's very difficult to get right and simultaneously make interesting, because the reality of war is that much of war is not action.
Much of war is sitting around and logistics. So I'll try and make it real while also trying to push forward and make the story fun. I have a very simple outline ready, and I'm excited to get started.
Audiobooks are all rolling forward. I received Ard's Oath on Friday, so I'll probably put it through my beta readers this coming week and then get it out on Audible for next month, hopefully. They are working on Returner's Defiance next week. So, we should have monthly audio for the next couple of months.
It'll be a little tricky after that because dungeon diving isn't quite caught up yet. We may have a slight delay with that. However, Chris and Jessica have told me they could do some extra books at the end of the year. So, I might stuff some things in there and get them caught up in time for the grand switcheroo.
If your upset about the narrators changing, as I'm sure someone will comment. It's sorta too little too late now!
As for the webcomic, I am massively disappointed with its current status. I am legally unable to post it anywhere right now. We have a huge volume of line art done. We were touch and go on a couple of colorist, but we finally settled on one. They've started on this backlog of line art.
I'm working on it. I'm trying to get myself out of my contract so I can post it somewhere else. It's really boring and terrible for me to keep saying that to you guys. If you've been looking forward to it, I am still on hold.
My contract is up for renegotiation in December. At present, that renegotiation is going to look something like me ripping it up and throwing it back at them. I'm not sure how quickly I can get it to a new spot once I get out of the contract. Though I have been talking to Webtoons. Until that contract is out, I can't really start putting ink down on another contract somewhere else. But I'm really pushing. I want to get this out.
Everything is mine when I get out of this contract, that's at least the best part. I self funded the comic and retained control of production, just signed a contract of exclusivity for better royalties.
Regarding Kickstarters, we are currently expecting to receive the shipment of the books sometime early to mid-November. I have a lovely storage unit rented out for them to be delivered to. Chris and I are prepping. We will essentially be working as a fulfillment center in that storage unit for probably about two weeks. But we will get them shipped out, I'm hoping, by the end of November. We are also working to get all of the digital rewards packaged up and sent to you guys at the end of October.
I am sorry for how long the Kickstarter took. Ninety percent of that delay was me having trouble finding time in my schedule to write about five normal chapter lengths of work for Dragon's Justice bonus chapters. Honestly, Chris finished most of the work for the Kickstarter in like a month and then I was bad. Sorry. But things will keep rolling forward. No more new projects for me for a while.
Everything is looking great on my end. Ard's Oath and Dungeon Diving are both very strong series. I'm probably going to finish Ard's Oath with six books.I have a War arc in my head and then I have a Zenovia arc in my head. And those two arcs, I'm hoping, will bring a nice amount of conclusion to the story.
I have a bunch of new series brewing in the back of my head. We'll see what's ready when the times comes. I have given into Sauce and have about 1/4 of a space book dictated, but not edited.

Do you know what audiobooks will still be released this year?

2024-11-27 12:22:46 +0000 UTCLooking forward to the continuation of the Dungeon Diving series. Crimson has to be one of my favorite modern characters.

2024-11-09 19:12:16 +0000 UTCReally hope AO and DD continue. Best series yet.

2024-10-18 02:19:58 +0000 UTCI really hope Bruce doesn’t really try to end AO in just 2 more books! It is my 2nd favorite series right after DD. At first I didn’t like RD but then I listened to book 1 and immediately jumped on Patreon to catch up book 2. RD has the potential to rival DJ in length. Hell DJ could have gone another book even.
Jeremy Daniels
2024-10-16 12:46:41 +0000 UTCBruce did not want the raid to be a blow out no challenge. Also the rest of the class would not have learned to work together if Ken carried them all.

2024-10-15 22:26:15 +0000 UTCWith all of the other gods and mythologies still left to explore in this world, the sky (well the heavens) are the limit!!!

2024-10-15 11:34:33 +0000 UTCYay space series!!! Cannot wait to see your take on the genre. Thank you as always for the updates.
Christopher Gino
2024-10-15 11:33:24 +0000 UTCArd's Oath should be dozens of books. After the war and Zenovia, there's still a whole world to explore! (As has even been hinted to in the latter books.)

2024-10-14 17:34:13 +0000 UTCBro you got it backwards. I am making fun of the people who complain. I do not think he needs to edit that much. I enjoy the story. I really can not believe people said why didn't you say Ken got dressed as a complaint. Just looking to be petty is all I can guess. They do not deserve the attention he has given them.

2024-10-14 08:38:00 +0000 UTCWhy so he can get splattered? Crimson is broken for her level and many above her level

2024-10-14 08:13:26 +0000 UTCI mean assuming ard doesn't take a hand in every single thing the kingdom does after dealing with Martin I imagine broad stroke writing could handle the rest of the war arc
Austin Wolf
2024-10-14 08:12:27 +0000 UTCBro you are reading what is almost a rough draft from a guy pumping out a chapter a day for what has been multiple years now. If you want to complain about a leap in logic his brain took that his fingers didn't type go review the final product instead
Austin Wolf
2024-10-14 08:10:32 +0000 UTCYeah the pulling back on the Liminal Speed was ridiculous the last book he's killing an entire dwarven battalion and Queen and in this one he's having so much trouble with level appropriate bosses? How was he supposed to do the raid without the game breaking skill?
Jose Paz III
2024-10-14 04:26:51 +0000 UTCI am going to admit to slightly pulling back a little on Ken's liminal speed in the beginning of the book. I had started the book with the raid being a WoW Raid nostalgia rather than Ken Explodes All the Bosses on his first try. After reading this I can completely understand why you did it like that and I now like the way it was handled.

2024-10-14 02:28:35 +0000 UTCPlease don't go down the cooking/brewing/distilling rabbit hole. Logan Jacobs and Eric Vall have done that and I can't stand those books.
Haskell
2024-10-14 01:39:30 +0000 UTCSome time back when he first announced that he was switching narrators he said that it was because of scheduling issues. They don’t have enough availability to keep up with his release schedule. Dd202 just released a couple of days ago and he finished it on Patreon 3 and half months ago. He is trying to get the audio to release closer to if not with the day it drops on kindle.

2024-10-14 01:02:54 +0000 UTCSo go ahead and spend your two minutes making changes. Most of the complaints seemed to me that they want a character like the prince as the main character. So we need to get more people posting positive comments here. Should be embarrassed to say you didn't say he got dressed. Really
Bru-
2024-10-14 00:20:16 +0000 UTCno way in 2 books, no matter what he says, AO was originally supposed to be 3 books if I'm remembering correctly, but we now have the other continents and societies, and then Ard's eventual becoming a god and whatever conflict with them
Ryan Romano
2024-10-14 00:12:38 +0000 UTCThanks for the update. I have enjoyed your books immensely. I find you great dialog and interpersonal interactions. I will admit I'm in the minority in that I really don't like OP MCs. I find myself reading more for the side characters instead of the main, as I loose interest once they become OP and never really suffer any consequences. I really enjoy the AO series for the snarky dialog. I look forward to seeing where things go in both series.
Steve Wells
2024-10-14 00:05:35 +0000 UTCLooking forward to more of Ard's Oath. The series massively expanded in scope with the last book IMO so not sure if it can all be wrapped up in 2 books. But thanks for giving us new reading material so frequently. Good luck with the webcomic and kickstarter stuff.
ArbabSB
2024-10-13 23:42:51 +0000 UTCI don't want to turn this into a place just for bashing on people, but you should check out Garrett Finlay or Marcus Jahn. I guarantee Lewis won't be your least favorite male voice anymore... especially if you don't like whining.
Jon Burden
2024-10-13 22:52:45 +0000 UTCI know some people were unhappy about them mispronouncing things, others were unhappy with lewis because Ken is supposed to be 18 and he sounded too old. I personally think they were doing an ok job.
Jon Burden
2024-10-13 22:48:20 +0000 UTCArd’s Oath seems to have a lot more story to it than two more books can cover.

2024-10-13 22:20:59 +0000 UTCI hope that Ken meets a villain on crimson level. Blessed by the dungeon

2024-10-13 22:20:36 +0000 UTCThe original narrators made several blunders in the reading. Mispronunciation, repeated lines, etc. and the fans were disappointed.

2024-10-13 21:05:11 +0000 UTCAnd yes I am completely aware I am asking this before even seeing where the story in two books but what can I say besides I don't want it to end 🙃

2024-10-13 21:02:20 +0000 UTCI admit I was a little irritated when he said he thought DD203 was good, but I was reassured when I read that his assistant passed on our comments and that we are talking about the same things about the series, even though I don't think this new book is good, I'm happy to know that Bruce is seeing the errors and flaws as well as the potential of the story to improve it not Only inDD but in AO and the kickstarters
Sett
2024-10-13 20:54:59 +0000 UTCWell with this little tidbit I'd like to say please consider running more books in the series so ard can further explore the world. I know it may be difficult to do with ards character and lack of desire to leave anyone he loves behind along with your desire to keep the protagonists powers moving ever upwards but a book or two of ard being at the peak after zenovia and getting to take his family to see a bit of the world could be good
Austin Wolf
2024-10-13 20:52:17 +0000 UTCI totally agree bri

2024-10-13 20:49:36 +0000 UTCDude your not supposed to admit to giving in to sauce your supposed to keep him hanging so he’ll cry more then get excited when you release it

2024-10-13 20:49:30 +0000 UTCTbh as a listener to many different dual author books Lewis Alexander is probably my least favorite male voice. I and apparently many others dislike his pronunciation, inflections, and odd choice of voice break/crack that reminds me more of whining and less of the intense emotion I believe he is trying to convey
Austin Wolf
2024-10-13 20:47:17 +0000 UTCMeans more when Bruce confirms it

2024-10-13 20:44:03 +0000 UTCIt's all manaverse 😬
Austin Wolf
2024-10-13 20:43:20 +0000 UTCEnjoyed the book, I think with some Stat charts thrown in it will give us a bit of an idea of where he is at. I think it would be funny to kind of put Crimson in a "class" with the rest of them in Star City. Lots of new information to be had with the new races. Might be nice to do a quick check in at school/earth/elf land. Understand the frustration with the webcomic, that absolutely sucks man. I'll keep waiting to see where that goes. Excited to see the next step for Ard and company. Thanks for your writing, it's been great fun waiting for each chapter.

2024-10-13 20:27:09 +0000 UTCLol Bruce won't admit Ken has harem protagonist haircut

2024-10-13 20:21:56 +0000 UTCI believe there were lots of complaints about the original pair. I think it also had to do with mispronouncing things.

2024-10-13 20:07:09 +0000 UTCcan anyone just tell me why bruce made the shift of narrators for DD?

2024-10-13 19:13:18 +0000 UTCThanks for the update BS, was hoping AO was gonna go on longer with us getting a look at the other continents, but looking forward to what your next story is.

2024-10-13 18:36:09 +0000 UTCHey Bruce. I appreciate the information. But I gotta say....... your killing me lol your writing style is so dang good and those story's keep me from loosing my mind while working. So keep kick butt!

2024-10-13 18:25:55 +0000 UTCTake your time on the Kickstarter. We knew going in it was gonna take time and as some one who got the higher tier package I'm just looking forward to them in general.

2024-10-13 18:24:15 +0000 UTCHey thanks Bruce. I’m glad you’re rocking and rolling. Dd 203 was good and really enjoyed it. Ever since joining Patreon my body wakes me around 2 every morning and I’m reading the chapters you put out. I actually happened to find your books when I got injured last fall. And I got hooked onto your stuff. If you’re ever looking for more beta listeners I’m always game. Just enjoy writing. Keep up the good work.

2024-10-13 18:20:20 +0000 UTCTake all the time you need! I look forward to getting my hands on the Kickstarter books! Keep up the good work. 👍👌

2024-10-13 18:20:15 +0000 UTCSad to hear that you will most likely finish Ards Oath at 6 books. Probably one of my favorite series from you so far. Glad all is well and hopes everything works out with the contract negotiations. Thanks for the update Bruce 👍.

2024-10-13 18:19:56 +0000 UTCNow its been a while since i last read it but is Saving Supervillans done as a series? I dont remember the book coming to an actual close but i could very well be mistaken

2024-10-13 18:19:43 +0000 UTCHave you read all the comments on latest chapter, it’s all the same too short and too rushed , the whole book is too short also i hope you don’t go to hard on academy stuff and focus on new floors new species new ability’s.
