Patreon Update 6-7-24
Added 2024-06-08 00:47:32 +0000 UTCAlright, let’s do this update.
I finished DD 202. Which is good, because I have clearly been struggling a little bit. I hate the word ‘burnout’ because when you listen to people who are experts in it, they split the colloquial category into burnout and overwhelm.
So, I’m going to talk a little about what burnout and overwhelm are. Who knows? Maybe it’s helpful for some of you.
When burnout is defined in that context, I laugh and it is the complete polar opposite of my mentality. Which is great. I don't have burnout. Burnout-burnout is continuing to put x effort in expecting y result and continuing not to get y result. The best parallel I can come up with is the claw machine. You know, the one that never ever actually gets anything.
Unless you are a savant at those things, you might have experienced the futileness of those machines. At a certain point you realize it’s useless, you are frustrated and you never want to touch those things again. THAT’S BURNOUT. Except when your life depends on the finances from said exercise, you push further. Imagine if that claw machine was what kept you fed, and you had to keep trying, hoping and continuing to fail to get the stuffed-whatever.
Imagine the resentment you’d build towards the processes and once you stopped or found any alternative to your time, how hard it would be to go back. Ta-da. That’s a small portion of what truly burned out authors feel.
I don’t have burnout, my expectations are low and I’m achieving well above them. You see many authors starting to break out and dream of hitting the NYT or some other lofty goal. A year or two later, they burn out despite doing well.
It isn’t about the current success; it is about the constant failure of their goal. Especially in goals that they can’t control.
Overwhelm, isn’t burnout-burnout. It’s when you have a massive pile of to-dos that might have accumulated when you were only getting 4 hours of sleep a night. Or it might be your brain being fried after being screamed at for half an hour before dropping your kid off at daycare.
Too many inputs and suddenly it’s all jammed up. There is no more bandwidth for outputs, certainly not creative ones. - This is me.
I’m working on things to try to rejigger my day-to-day so that I can get back to where I was. Right now I’m mostly getting 5-6 chapters Mon-Fri.
Anyway, enough of that. DD 202 is a decent book. I’m putting it down feeling like it’s a little transitional in the overall story. Not bad, but I’m going to do another heavy pass on it, much like I ended up doing to 104. There are a few threads I think I dropped, which might end up creating some new scenes in it. We’ll see.
Other news, I’m bringing on 2 new editors. You won’t see an effect on patreon until I get further ahead again, but I want to put out cleaner novels.
I might slow down audio again and put a proofer in there. Just to have cleaner things coming out. It cuts down a lot of drag on my end.
AO 4 has started. Ard snark is wonderful, as always. I managed to reread all of book 1 and 2. Normally I struggle to reread some of my books, skipping around quite a bit. There were little nuggets I was able to pick up and hopefully carry threads through to the book in very satisfying ways.
That and I have a fairly clear vision of what AO 4 is going to look like.
Webcomic is coming along. We have 7 episodes complete. I need 10 for launch and 6 for buffer. We’ve gotten several weeks of a complete episode in a week, which is what I was waiting on before I pulled the rug out from under the script writers.
They were doing the adaption a little too literal. There’s some work that has to be done to change verbal humor into physical humor and some angle changing to make it pop more. I’ve been reading too many webcomics (totally part of my job and not at all a way to procrastinate when I’m struggling to write) and gotten a fair idea of what we need to change.
The most recent chapters have been written and edited with that in mind. Significant improvement. Now we just need to look back at chapter one and find a simple way to make some of those changes and not redo the whole thing.
So, things are getting back on track. This week I’ve had 2, count them, 2! Days of 8 hours of sleep. It’s glorious. New editors start with AO 4. Webcomic feels like it’s been course corrected. Good things are happening. I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job of digging myself out of the hole.
Things are on the up and up. Will I miss some more weekends? Not going to rule it out. I’d really like to get back on the book a month train. That means 8-9 chapters a week and rebuilding a buffer for patreon. Going to push myself this next week if the sleep doesn’t backslide.

DD202 was great, but I felt something was missing from his normal work I can't put my finger on. There are so many places to go in this series, not to mention I'm sure the group could use some down time. Think Fayeth was promised some soon. Need more of the grand parents also.

2024-08-06 01:04:21 +0000 UTCI was pleased with DD202. I would like to see his harem get bigger. There are enough interested for a raid harem, and his incubus skills are severely under used. I do look forward to DD 203.

2024-08-03 19:20:27 +0000 UTCHonestly, I’d rather you went straight to DD 203, but that’s just cause I prefer DD to AO or your other stuff. I didn’t think 202 was bad, just maybe a little rushed. For 203, i think a return to focus on his Trelican class and synergizing with his Liminal Speed, as well as returning to more focus on his own party or the expansion of his harem if he’s going to. Maybe get Ken into fighting the Naga, or introducing another major villain besides SJS, which feels similar to the AEF or whatever they’re called. But again, love DD and I hope that you can find your way through your problems. Too many projects maybe? That would certainly add plenty of stress

2024-06-21 04:06:33 +0000 UTCSeriously loved 202 as it is 👍 I think like most I wasn’t crazy about betting Crimson but I didn’t find it as big of a deal. However I really liked the post Patreon changes you made to 104 especially cause they surprised me when I listened to the audiobook so I’m all for whatever you do with 202 I’ll be counting the days till I can hear the audio. Well done again Bruce! 🍻 🎉 🍾

2024-06-11 22:00:34 +0000 UTCReally enjoyed the continuation of the series but could definitely feel your struggle in it as well, mostly through the increase of spelling/word errors and some story consistency issues such as the name of the referenced TV show changing from Roommates to Neighbors between chapters or the disappearance of the facilities built by the Harem Queen in the safe zone before the raid that were supposed to be more than what she built by the Dwarves which included living quarters for the classes. I think it is amazing the rate at which you write and the quality of your stories and characters. Always take care of yourself first because if you don’t then there will be nothing to take care of others.

2024-06-10 02:22:29 +0000 UTCI am far behind because I follow your content mostly through audio format so I can’t comment on DD 202. I do agree that you’re the best in the space. If your burning out I support taking some time off I’m not going anywhere!

2024-06-09 15:55:22 +0000 UTCI have re read and re listened to dungeon diving and Ards oath twice. I can’t get enough of AO, such a great story you have shared. Thank you! I’ll patiently wait forever for more to come out.

2024-06-09 13:25:10 +0000 UTCI greatly enjoyed DD 202 as I have greatly enjoyed all your books. If you need to slow down or take a break entirely on the writing then I am all for that. You are trying to do all this while also taking care of your kid. Take care of yourself, slow down when you need to. We will still be here for you.😁

2024-06-08 22:17:01 +0000 UTCI find it fascinating that you can crank out content the way you do. I certainly won’t complain if you need a break now and then. I imagine being rested properly would only make the writing sharper and more on point. Side note I’m reading AO3 again to prep for next week. I was a bit cool on that series at first, but really enjoyed 3. Looking forward to the 4th book. And REALLY looking forward to the next Returner book. Keep up the good work…. At a healthy pace.

2024-06-08 19:24:54 +0000 UTCI think you're pushing yourself too hard with everything. The speed that you're pumping stuff out is insane, even more so, considering you're carrying 2-3 different stories at a time. Chapters every day is awesome for us, but what does that do to you? It's not worth living a life where you're constantly under duress, I know what that's like and it's bullshit. The worst part, is that we usually do it to ourselves, because we want to fulfill some kind of time constraint we promised or just keep people happy. It will keep wearing on you and your mental state until you're nothing but a zombie. We may pay you for your stories, so you feel obligated keep up a tempo, but ultimately you hold the cards. If you cut your chapters down to 4 a week, I would be surprised if more than a few boobs drop the subscrition. If you need a break? Take a damn break! My three most longstanding patreon memberships all take a full month off at least once a year, they don't charge for the month of course, but yeah they take time for themselves. They also take a few days of the month off for editing and if something else comes up? The just say "no chapter xx day". They don't explain, it just is what it is. If you came out and said you were reducing your output and taking a couple extra days a month for whatever reason, I would still pay you the same subscription, because I like your stories and I want to read them. It would be a little bit disappointing but 100% understandable. Hope you see this comment.

2024-06-08 10:59:45 +0000 UTCFor my part I find everything you write is very entertaining and fantastic. I am happy for you that you are finding a rhythm in your family and your writing. I reiterate that if you have to skip a weekend here and there no biggie no biggie everybody needs a little bit of extra time now and then. I thank you for all that you do and looking forward to things in the future. I also have to throw in my two cents worth I really like the returner story that you started looking forward to Ard too.

2024-06-08 09:53:43 +0000 UTCI’ll be the first to say DD202 didn’t reach the heights one would normally expect from your work Bruce, being overwhelmed is a terrible thing. That feeling of ice skating up hill just to keep still is never a good one, and I can only imagine how much worse it is knowing it’s how you feel your kids. I’m with everyone else here, hoping you’re able to rest and find the work-life-balance you need. Slowing down won’t kill anyone, we’ll still be here, even if you need to skip a few days/weeks. Look after #1

2024-06-08 08:42:09 +0000 UTCI'm more excited for Returned 2 than anything else. Maybe it's because the story is new and shiny, but I cant wait for you to get back to it.

2024-06-08 08:18:38 +0000 UTCLooking forward to DD202 and RD1 audiobooks! I’ve had AO 2&3 and DD201 audio pre-ordered since the hour they were put up 😆 sorry to hear times are stressful but hey we appreciate what all goes in to making them and understand you have RL problems too. Take the weekends to relax in Sentarshaden, your fans aren’t going anywhere

2024-06-08 07:51:54 +0000 UTCJust wanted to add that I just finished Returned absolutely loved it. Looking for forward to that coming into the rotation. As I'm a new fan I haven't gotten AO so I plan on checking that out next from your library

2024-06-08 05:31:12 +0000 UTChope you keep cranking out fun stories with some spice, I cant wait for more returners, that new series really hooked me. Your sub is the best and hope you feel better.

2024-06-08 04:46:40 +0000 UTCAgree with everyone else’s comments. Bruce is still one of the best in this genre. DD 202, while not his best was still a decent book. Best sections were the interactions between the women and the sections on the Silver Claws. The dungeon and raid elements stumbled a bit, and that seems to be borne out by the comments on each chapter.
Mistweaver
2024-06-08 03:38:31 +0000 UTCOverall, I think you're handling things well. DD202 did feel transitional, but the writing was still good and feels like it's leading up to even more epic plot threads. But sometimes the characters just need a bit of "downtime" just like you as an author do as well. So, I will say this: THANK YOU! Tha you for your writing and you brilliant books. Look after yourself.

2024-06-08 03:23:15 +0000 UTCSir, I hate to break it to you, but not sleeping is just part of the package as a family grows. I doubt I need to say this, but it's good for those without kids to read if they happen by my comment. So here it goes. This isn't to discourage anyone from having kids. The value you receive back is 1000 times what you put in, but it takes a little bit for you to really start to feel the returns emotionally. As a parent of more than 1 child you find you sleep much less than you would like regularly. By the time you hit 3 children from 3 - 7 years of age (i'll use myself as the example here) you find adults sleeping anywhere from 3 to 9 hours nightly. More often weighted towards the 3. My wife and I work opposite schedules, and I work overnights so we can both work full time. Tonight I went to bed at 6pm to wake up for work at 9:30pm. I didn't fall asleep till likely closer to 7. It's just part of it early on into their lives. Some don't sleep well, others are of an age they don't sleep much all at once. Sometimes your in the training stage for them waking up to use the toilet.. lot of bed sheet changing.. sometimes they are in a nightmare phase and come into the room at virtually any time of the night crying for you to soothe their fear. It's work.. it's a lot of work. Training someone else how to be a person isn't light shit. The reward is complex, but profound. It's a sense of mastery, of the self, of the world, and of the art of personhood. You feel more complete, and simultaneously more drained dry. Though every moment they succeed at something new.. it's like you did, and though it just means moving into the next thing or the next phase of the process. It's an unrivaled sense of achievement.

2024-06-08 02:58:10 +0000 UTCBruce, though I had some complaints about DD202 I hope you realize that overall I'm here because I enjoy your writing and your books. I'm here to support you and hope that my few dollars a month can help ensure you can comfortably continue writing. I often tell writers I support that I hope you take care of yourself first because then they will put out higher quality content. That doesn't just apply to Burnout or Overwhelm. Which is part of why I've said multiple times that I feel you put out too much content... But, I have to admit that if the others areas of your life allow you to put as much as you do and it doesn't actually cause significant stress... Maybe 5+ chapters a week is workable. Just take breaks when needed. We'll understand if you need to take a week or two off every month or two! Thanks for the update!
Clinton Walsh
2024-06-08 02:55:45 +0000 UTCI agree with the comments you are a great author and produce a lot of content very quickly if you need to slow down a little to make sure everything is tip top and to make sure you aren't overwhelmed with all the little stuff do it. You already have written over 30 books that are consistently solid and well written. Not many people can say that especially today. Keep it up and I'll keep my lurking and consuming the media. ( Though I am very partial to the audio versions). And I await the comic very eagerly

2024-06-08 02:44:59 +0000 UTCHaven’t found anything you have written that I didn’t like and enjoy reading . Reading your latest chapters while drinking coffee at 3:30 in the morning gives a great start to the day. But catch up on the sleep I know the feeling of being run down only avarage 5 to 6hrs 5 to 6 days a week
Jordan Vineyard
2024-06-08 02:31:40 +0000 UTCSorry to hear about the overwhelm but glad to hear things are looking positive and you feel good about where things are headed. And that you got some sleep. Please don't push yourself too hard. Your output is insane as it is, especially for someone with a new kid, and I don't think any of us would mind fewer chapters per week for the sake of your well-being, not to mention improving the quality of the content. Take care and good luck with your upcoming projects.

2024-06-08 02:18:01 +0000 UTCI agree with all of the commenters here! You are a great author and I have read nearly everything you have published and they are all great! I can relate to being overwhelmed, I work for a major company in IT and avg 60+ hours a week keeping things running. Thankfully I’m making some new changes to reduce the hours and free up time! Your weekends drops are a bonus to me, but I don’t expect them and like another person said, if it was only once a month I would read it! Work Life Balance is a must so you don’t break down! Keep doing what you enjoy and will be here to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Returner is going to be another awesome series!

2024-06-08 01:55:10 +0000 UTCCan't wait for AO3 audio to drop so I can binge listent to 2 and 3 in a row. (Having already read them) I think AO and the mana master series are my favorites from you thus far can't wait for more AO

2024-06-08 01:36:15 +0000 UTCone of my favorite authors posted something that i think you should take to heart. The boiled down version was that he/you wright these stories because you want to and we are just trying to get a glimpse of what is going to happen. We are her because we support you. if you go down to 1 chapter a month ill still be here. don't get over worked for us, get what you imagine out into the world an we will like it.

2024-06-08 01:31:37 +0000 UTCIt is definitely a transition book but still well done. Had to introduce a lot of new characters and interactions/dynamics between people and schools. If it would have been tossed into the next book it probably would have felt rushed. I'm sure there are complaints but I would agree that I enjoyed this book a lot. Really looking forward to some of those interactions on Audio too.

2024-06-08 01:11:10 +0000 UTCTake whatever time you need. As much as I want the next installment of...well, everything, it's no good if it costs you your physical and/or mental well-being. Looking forward to the AO3 audiobook. It keeps taunting me from my Audible wish list with it's bright smile, massive rack, and a knife casually held at an angle that says, "Yeah, this could get violent quickly, but either way, it's going to be fun," followed by laughter that bid farewell to sanity some time ago and does not regret the loss.

2024-06-08 01:10:49 +0000 UTCI don't work in anything close to the same field but I can definitely relate to the to-do list piling up faster than it goes down. Definitely overwhelming at times and calls for a staycation.

2024-06-08 01:00:20 +0000 UTCBruce I can’t speak for everyone but you have been doing an amazing job with the books and don’t take my word for it just look at your kickstarter your goal was 5000 and it got to 33k+. I hope things get better with baby and work load I remember how tough those days were when my kids were that age and I was working. If there’s anything us readers can do to help besides supporting you here and reading your amazing books please let us know.

2024-06-08 00:55:30 +0000 UTCThanks for the info. I felt like you were struggling with DD 202 as well in parts. It was good and parts were really great. However, it didn't have the same...oomph, for lack of a better work as the others. I still enjoyed it though and I'll still buy it when it comes out. Take care of yourself first though. If you get too overwhelmed or actually hit burnout as you described it, then no more of these awesome novels and that would be horrible for us as readers and bad for you as an author since you seem to enjoy writing. So take care of yourself first, and the rest will sort itself out somehow.
