Chapter Update
Added 2023-12-21 02:41:53 +0000 UTCQuick update, mostly focused on Spellblade 7.
First, Mob Sorcery's audio is now up on Audible for pre-order. It's releasing on Jan 30th. I've listened to a fair bit of it and it's good. Nice range of accents, as you'd expect if you've read it. Nina's amazing, as always, and super emotive. Fia sounds right out of the Sopranos.
Also, Spellblade 6 audio comes out on Boxing Day.
I've gone over the feedback from the recent post about the early chapters. A lot of people are satisfied, but there's a groundswell of folks who are unhappy for various reasons. While there's one common thread I can find, some of it is stuff that leaves me uncertain of how to react.
The big issue appears to be pacing. Spellblade is always fast-paced and dense, as there's a lot to get through and even the slower moments have a lot of character content, without much slice of life stuff to space things out. It's written like a normal fantasy novel where things are always happening, instead of lots of meandering. This means if you miss something or you've forgotten elements of the plot or characters, you'll be blindsided.
I try to include reminders about stuff, but this is both becoming harder over time, due to the sheer amount of stuff that's happened. It's simply impossible to include a plot recap every time a character shows up or an important event takes place. Especially as some people are going to be entirely aware of why events are occurring and be annoyed at the paragraphs of explanations, while any hamfisted reminder won't actually help the readers who have forgotten as they'll likely feel it should have been done organically.
On top of this is the general subject of pacing out events. If Spellblade has lots of low periods after any major action, it won't get anywhere. We're already at a point where I know a lot of people are going to complain when the series doesn't at Book 7, and to be honest, the difficulties getting this book off the ground and the reasons for it have made me reconsider extending the series.
The choice feels like one between ditching a lot of content and spacing stuff out. It's not a "why not both" option, because I just don't have the time to write huge monolithic books that include literally everything. Some of this is also exacerbate by the fact some people just don't like some characters and content in the books, which leads to a certain level of fatigue.
Because I want to get Spellblade 7 done and this frustration has me strongly considering ditching it and writing another book entirely, I'm going to try to make some changes and push on. They are:
- Chapters 1 and 2 remain largely the same. I'll try to explain Artemis's stealth ability better, but I think this has been completely misconstrued.
- There'll be some time set aside to react to Otto and Artemis in Chapters 1 and 2, so that people can understand where the books are going. I may cut the dream stuff about the multiverse at the start of Chapter 3, because I'm worried people will misconstrue it as Nathan jumping worlds (and I know some people hate that idea).
- I'm still uncertain how to handle the Astra stuff, given how many people just missed any problems with her in Book 6 and have completely forgotten about her backstory in Book 3. This feels like a divide between people who reread the series and those who don't. Astra has some major involvement in this book, particularly around the middle.
I don't know if there'll be any chapters until after Christmas given this mess.

Thats a very frustrating issue, and one brought about by human nature it seems. These books are dense (in the best way possible) and even if one didn't want to reread a whole book (though I can't see why you'd actively avoid doing so), even rereading parts of previous books would alleviate the issue of not knowing what is going on when events happen or characters come around. This is absolutely a reflection of people's inability to take responsibility for their own memory or lack thereof. There is nothing wrong with the pacing, as you've said, Spellblade has always been dense and action packed and very detailed. Missing a key detail somewhere along the lines means you may not understand something later. An easy solution is to go back and either reread the series, the book the original info, or even asking in the comments on here. It is not the authors job or problem in my eyes, to have to write the books such that they spoon feed all the previous information from the rest of the series. The point of reading book 6 or book 7 in any series is that you know what's happened thus far and would like to know what happens next. It would be insulting to those of us who actually pay attention and can retain information (or can be bothered to find it if necessary) and it wouldnt be written in your trademark style. Ham fisted was a very apt way to put those obviously injected paragraphs explaining what should be known to some degree already. There can only be so much recap before it makes no sense. I'm disgusted that people and their nitpicking whining has possibly changed your mind about writing more in this series. It is understandable to consider a break. It is such an epic tale that I do hope you end up writing 8 or even 9 Spellblade books, the way you've written them all. I think you've done a wonderful thing bringing this story to be and I cannot wait for more, if you are willing. You create wonderful works for us and shame on those who complain. I hope you can continue your way

2023-12-21 16:25:05 +0000 UTChonestly if you wanted to take some time to rewrite the whole thing and maybe focus on another book I'm totally fine with that, wanting to write the best book you can isn't something to be looked down on and if you feel like you can do better or just don't like the way the series is going thus far feel free to change it, its your story after all.

2023-12-21 15:57:46 +0000 UTCIt's difficult to step away and finish them while still posting chapters to Patreon, especially while I'm behind. I also don't want to pretend that I always have the right idea on how to write things, as rewriting the opening to Book 6 was the right call and only happened due to feedback. It's just sometimes hard to parse.

2023-12-21 13:50:15 +0000 UTCI don’t usually comment since I rarely have anything to complain about, but I feel compelled to chime in now. While the pacing does feel breakneck at this point that’s to be expected in second to last book of a series. There is a lot of threads to wrap up and only so many pages to do it in. You’ve not written a book I haven’t liked yet so I trust you. Tell the story how you feel it needs to be told!

2023-12-21 06:40:48 +0000 UTCThanks for the communication. It's an intricate series I often do a reread before each release to catch up. I haven't had any complaints on the series. Any of your series. Loving what you're doing with Mob Sorcery.

2023-12-21 04:48:11 +0000 UTCI think this deep into a series the reader can be trusted to not need frequent in-story reminders. The plot recap and glossary in the beginning are good, however the glossary should be about the characters stories and keep physical descriptions in the story itself.

2023-12-21 03:17:13 +0000 UTCYou may have reached a point where you need to step away from the community and finish the last couple books your way and just let chips fall. People are going to love/hate how you finish this series, period. No matter what you do, there will be "justified" complaints, and I'm sorry, but they will be vocal as hell.

2023-12-21 03:07:57 +0000 UTCYou can’t please everyone. And while I did feel the pacing was a little jerky I stand by the individual scenes were great and I love me some astra scene.
