Neural Wraith 3 - Ch1-3

Chapter 1

That sounds like a really smart play and be a refreshing change of pace.

I'm sure that I can open a book with a firefight at some point. Realistically, the shift is mostly because the series has moved to the episodic mystery model. So Nick will usually be turning up to a crime scene or one will occur in the opening chapter. We'll see how I feel for the next book, but I'm considering something lower stakes for the next book (originally, it was going to be the inverse).

Book 1's introduction was a slow and steady pace into the plot. Book 2's introduction starts with an ominous murder in the first few chapters. Book 3's introduction is a mass murder in chapter 1. If book 4 doesn't start in a thrilling firefight with Nick fighting for his life, in the first few paragraphs, I'll honestly be surprised. XD

"wont" is an old-fashioned way of describing a common form of behaviour. It's typically used humorously these days.

I saw what could be a word error in chapter 1. What’s written is “as robots were wont to do.” This sounds a little odd to me.

Then John Smith’s previous suggestion of using Persephone would probably work out or the Celtic goddess Cerridwen who is the underworld deity and keeper of the cauldron of knowledge (witchcraft). Anyway It’s all good, loving the series and looking forward to reading the rest. 👍

Robert Crowder

The underworld reference is specifically about the Altnet, not Yggdrasil. Pretty much every name related to the Altnet has some meaning (Yggdrasil as both the world tree and its role in Ragnarok; the dual meaning of DAO; an underworld goddess/entity running it). So while I'm partial to keeping Hel (I might actually run a poll on her name), I definitely want the name to be strongly related to the underworld.

I love this. So excited you didn’t go with the normal “detective tries to prevent the terrorist attack” trope. Instead you let it happen which feels much realer. Good work!

I love Neural wraith , even more so than Heretic Spellblade, Demon Thone(Emperor Reforged takes me cake tho) , absurdly based m8, THANKS

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil represents all nine realms not just the underworld. I think you could use another Norse goddess like Frigg/Freya in place of Hel if you wanted to.

Robert Crowder

Persephone may work. That I recently replaid Hades is immaterial.

John Smith

Could have Helena refer to Hel as Helly (confusing Nick greatly for extra bonus) or some other nickname.

Joe S.

I love that you have Hel doing it. The myth that all of the dead that die outside of combat are Hel's domain is even a highlight in what appears to be the zombie edition of the series.. Also in the Voluspa, Hel is said to reside beneath one of the three roots of Yggdrasil. I love it, just wanted to caution in case you get hit by auto correct or complete.

Jeff Ford

You're not too far off, although the allusions to DDOSs give some strong hints. The NLF mods are explicitly not mentioned, but it occurs to me now that Nick should probably ask about them (as they're a fairly big white elephant in this situation).

K.D. Robertson

Yeah, I thought about that and not surprised it happened. It's thematically fitting (Norse underworld and all that) but problematic. I might check if there's some other female deity or entity in charge of an underworld that I can use outside of Norse myth.

K.D. Robertson

Super great, as always. Just a note that Helena and Hel's names are too alike and you've confused them at least once. Helena curtsies to nick in the conversation between nick and hel before he enters the boardroom.

Jeff Ford

Extremely excited that Neural Wraith 3 was pushed to the front. It is easily one of the most unique novel series I have ever read, and extremely well written to boot. I love how the story stars jumping right into the action! Also, funny that Ezekiel tried to brownnose, then got stuck in meeting. Cannot wait to see where it goes.

It's a shot in the dark, but this reminds me of those browser injections that mined crypto back when that was blowing up. It looks to me like whoever put together the anti-Aesir neural mods included a backdoor used for this. Also, you specified that Mark 1s used SMGs but didn't describe Mark 3s weapons.
