September Patreon Update

I imagine most of you saw the other post, but I'll reiterate it anyway. Given my inactivity, next month is free of charge for existing patrons. More on this later.

The update itself is fairly brief.

Anyway, with that out of the way, let's talk about Patreon. Again.

I'll also keep this fairly brief, although I'll talk a little more about some of my Patreon misgivings.

The first one is simple: I dislike how easily Patreon can become a way to take money from people while giving little (or nothing) back. That's why next month is free, because it seems fair to me.

The second problem is thornier, and relates to the way I write and Patreon itself. I just read a comment about how consistency is key, and I basically agree. I tend to overpromise and underdeliver, which is the opposite of what people want to see. Given I started this mostly as an experiment to do different stuff, and the money isn't that big of a deal, I'll use next month to either get things in order (which means changing something about my approach) or reassess the Patreon as a whole.

If this doesn't work for you, that's fine. I'm a supporter of a bunch of creators across various platforms and I know how this works. There should be enough going up over the next month to make up for this month and to let me assess where I go next.

Comments

I feel the same. Here to support the author, not really to get pre-release chapters. Just to toss a few bucks, some likes and comments to occasionally let them know that I appreciate their effort.

I'm somewhere in the 'I do not need a massive amount to consider Patreon a fair deal' - I have a few authors that are 'completed works only', a few that are 'once/twice a week (until release, and it is only 2/3 of the book on patreon)', and a few that have the full book on patreon by the end. I follow one that's releasing chapter by chapter a book that's coming out well in the future; but that author has a rather terrifying backlog. Find something that works for you; whatever it looks like.

Personally, I am on here to support you personally in your writing, whatever time table that may mean. So I don't mind a charge for this month, but I also wait for the books to fully release before reading them (kindle is easier on my eyes). Stoked for another book to release, but really itching for more HSB! Love your writing!
