With 13 Oscar nominations, Emilia Pérez is the most critically acclaimed film of the year. According to current rhetoric about “the importance of representation in media”, such attention being given to a film about a trans woman should be a watershed moment. But it’s… decidedly not.
Today, trans media critic (as in, media critic who is trans, not critic of trans media — though today, she is both) Fran Tirado breaks down the most bizarre film conundrum of the year and asks the hard questions: is it the responsibility of queer people to venerate every piece of media that “represents” us? What if the piece of media is bad? What if the people who created it don’t live up to pedestal “representation” put them on?

2025-05-07 21:37:43 +0000 UTCThere's dumb racism and there's... well, I wouldn't call it SMART racism... But there's making a stupid bad racist joke or making a poorly thought out comment, when you're mad, regurgitating stereotypes which is ALSO very bad, but it more oafish/idiot edgy teenager racism. Then there's the "This is a threat to our CIVILIZATION! These people are PARASITES! If we've learned ANYTHING from the war of 1173 we need to-" and you're like WHOAH WHOAH WHOAH! This isn't thoughtless bumbling, this something you think about A LOT. It's VERY deliberate.
