In this episode, we trace the deeper history, from families whose roots predated the U.S.–Mexico border, to the cycles of migrant labor that fueled both nations’ economies. We’ll see how the Great Depression turned migration into a political “crisis,” how WWII labor shortages led to the Bracero Program, and how postwar tensions escalated into harsher enforcement. Setting the stage for the Cold War era, when immigrants were no longer just seen as workers but as potential national security threats. And under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, this led to one of the largest mass deportation campaigns in U.S. history.
