"Heroic" == "lots of bloodshed" tracks, not just in the press, but in Hollywood too. Monster movies in particular are famous for not grasping how military training, tactics, technology, or diplomacy work, and instead creating drama based on how to misuse things so that the most people die. This was mocked in the novel Tress of the Emerald Sea (entertaining in its own right due to having an opinionated narrator who couldn't stop commenting on matters) by mentioning how important military people would be introduced by how many people died under their command.
