Choosing Violence - John Brown #2 - Extra History

John Brown was an American abolitionist leader who fought for the equality of all races. He helped countless slaves reach freedom in his lifelong pursuit of equality but his use of violence as a necessary tool is highly controversial, even to this day.

This series would never be allowed in Florida classrooms.

Jason Youngberg

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Personally, I'd call those Missourians who crossed the border to vote illegally and threatened to kill people who spoke out against slavery the real terrorists.

Jason Youngberg

Do we have any more context for Brown's conversation with Douglass where he argues that the North would join in to push out slavery if there was a full-on violent revolt? Was he wearing rose-colored glasses himself or trying to paint a good picture for Douglass? Because I think it's safe to say that the North would not at all have done that and Brown otherwise doesn't seem to be ignorant of how committed (or not committed) the average white Northerner was to the cause of abolition.

Lou Hartman

Having grown up in Virginia, I was surprised when I learned, in adulthood, that in the North Brown was considered a heroic martyr, In Virginia history lessons in elementary school, we were taught that Brown was a deranged murderer. What an enlightening contrast!

Margaret L. Carter

No more than any Founding Father and far less hypocritical

Abel Savard

The more I hear about him, the more I cannot help but conclude that, yeeeeeah, there is sorta an argument that you could apply the word "terrorist" to Brown.
