You also failed to mention how the will of the Supreme Chicken affected all events, as usual. 1871 7th February In the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Princess Leopoldina of Brazil, Youngest Daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, Passes away from Typhoid Fever at the Age of 23 inside the Palais Saxe-Coburg, Vienna. A Princess of Brazil from Birth, she Renounced her Titles upon her Marriage to Prince Ludwig August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, taking the Title Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duchess of Saxony. The Princess was also Second in Line for the Throne of Brazil, even after the Marriage of her older Sister, due to the Latter’s Difficulty in Producing an Heir ~ who would give Birth to a Son after only Ten Years of Marriage and almost Two Years after her Sisters’ Death ~ Include Princess Leopoldina’s Two Eldest Sons on the 2nd and 3rd Positions in the Line of Succession. After the Death of their Mother, the Two Young Princes are taken by their Grandfather to be Raised and Educated in Brazil. This Situation makes the Princess, although Involuntarily, the Founder of the Cadet Branch of Saxe-Coburg and Braganza. 1905 29th April In the Kingdom of Great Britain, these Losses are nothing Compared to the Chaos and Confusion that the Raiders have left in their Wake. Two Battleships ~ the HMS Sans Pareil and the HMS Camperdown, the Flagship of the Channel Fleet ~ have been sunk; a Third ~ HMS Colossus ~ has been Holed in the Bow and, Eventually, has to be Grounded, while the Cruiser HMS Narcissus is Accidentally Struck by a Shell Fired from a Shore Battery and Suffers Moderate Damage. In Retrospect, despite the Ideal Conditions for a Torpedo Attack, the Results are Relatively Poor; of the 22 Torpedoes Fired that Night, all but 6 have either Missed or Fail to Explode, while Half of these are Rendered Harmless by Torpedo Nets. But as Dawn Breaks over a Panicked and Burning Portland Harbour, this is beside the Point. The next Morning sees an outpouring of Grief and Rage that had not been seen since the Assassination of Queen Victoria in October 1887: the Newspapers are full of the Burning Hulks of the Channel Fleet and Bloodcurdling Calls for Revenge; French Waiters are Beaten up in the Streets and Arrested as Spies, and the Yeomanry is Hastily Called up for Fear of an Invasion. Yet there is little Despair; the Mood is set by the King, who Notes: “We are not Interested in the Possibilities of Defeat. Those do not Exist.” 1912 14th July In the Kingdom of France, Scarce has General Boulanger’s Dead Body been Discovered than his Regime Dissolves into Chaos. Maurice Barrès had Noted of the Boulangist Movement that: “the Royalists saw in Boulanger their King, Republicans their Republic, Imperialists their Caesar,” and the Political Differences between Boulanger’s Lieutenants are almost as as their Personal Animosities: Rochefort Considers Déroulède to be a Figure of Fun while being Detested by Meyer in Turn; La Bruyère Hates Meyer and Dillon while everybody Despises Terrail. All that held these Wildly dissimilar Characters together is the Tenuous Charm of the General; with his Death, no Unifying Force Remains. The Timing and Venue for the Final Confrontation could not have been more Dramatic: all of the Regime’s Major Figures, along with Numerous Troops, are in Paris for the Federation Day Celebrations and the Parades are well underway when the First Rumors of the General’s Suicide begin to Leak out. As it is, the Legitimists are the First to Act. Around Midday, Arthur Meyer is Informed of Boulanger’s Death by a Breathless Informant who has Sprinted all the way from the Élysée Palace to Meyer’s Apartment in the Hotel du Louvre. Realising he has to Seize his chance before his Rivals, Meyer Immediately Orders his Editorial Staff to Prepare the Necessary Proclamations, finds the Royalist Armand, Comte de Mackau, and Persuades him and his Men to leave their Places in the Parade and Occupy the Élysée and Bourbon Palaces. As Fragmentory Reports of Boulanger’s Death begin to Spread among the Revellers, Meyer, now Joined by Dillon and Terrail, Issues a Terse Statement Announcing the Restoration of the Monarchy and the Imposition of a Regency until the Duke of Madrid, Jacques de Bourbon, who, at this Point, is Serving in the Spanish Army in Morocco, Returns to France. 1929 11th April In the Russian SFSR, with the new Regime Established in Moscow, the Central Government has been given the Means to Stimulate Economic Growth According to Current needs. General ~ Secretary Stalin Decides to Order the Factories to Increase Military Production. 1936 3rd January In the Russian SFSR, the German Decision during the Berlin Conference in November 1935 to Force Russia to Repay the Remaining Part of the War Indemnities Imposed on Russia by the Central Powers at Brest-Litovsk One Year Earlier than Planned has put the Government in a Precarious Position. The Current Budget for 1936 is already Stretched to a Bare Minimum and, as a Result, the Supreme Soviet sees no other Alternative than to Impose Harsh Austerity Measures if they are to Pay the Teutonics. The Cuts in Government Spending will be most Harshly Felt in the Social Services Sector and in the many Homes of Invalided War Veterans Depending on the State’s Support. Russian Citizens are already Disgruntled and Dissatisfied with the Incumbent Coalition of Cadets and Leftist Revolutionaries United under Stalin and Trotsky and it is Feared that these Austerity Measures will bring even more Extreme Political Groupings unto the Political Scene. 1938 25th December The Christian Nations of the World Celebrate Christmas Day, Commemorating the Birth of Jesus Christ [also Called “Yeshua” in the Eastern Denominations] on 25th December 1 AD. 1941 13th April In the Russian SFSR, Foreign Minister Yōsuke Matsuoka and the Japanese Delegation are in High Spirits. They’re Slapping Backs, Hugging, many of them a little Intoxicated, Following a Celebration Banquet. For Half a Century, Japan has Feared an Attack by Russia, but no more. For the last Several Months, Matsuoka has been Negotiating a Non ~ Aggression Pact between Japan and Russia, and, today, they have Signed it. And, as the Conversation on the Platform Dwindles, Matsuoka Turns to see an Unbelievable Sight: Walking through the Crowd is Stalin himself, come to see Matsuoka off. This never Happens. Stalin doesn’t come to the Train Station just to give Diplomats a Personal Farewell. It’s at this Moment that Matsuoka Feels the Weight of and how badly the Russians want this Arrangement. Now, Stalin can Withdraw Troops from its Border with Manchuria and Move them West, while Japan, for its Part, can Remove its Own Troops and Push South. 1989 20th January In the Russian SFSR, General ~ Secretary Dmitry Yazov makes the First of Several Proposals that the Central Alliance Space Project and the Pacific and Atlantic Treaty Organisation should Pool their Resources and Work together, instead of Competing and Duplicating Efforts as is Happening now. His Proposal is Rejected both by the Member Nations of the Pacific and Atlantic Treaty Organisation and by his Own Ally, Byzantium, each Convinced that the other is trying to Steal their Technology.

It is still held up as one of the best books of the period, which is saying something.

Aaron Neumann

The best book on the subject IMHO.

Bort Ward

Funnily enough, there is a book called The Eagle Against The Sun, which goes into the various political and military spheres that ensured a war between the US and Japan. Very well-researched, to be honest.

Aaron Neumann

Yes you got the German flag in the First World War wrong last episode ~ the tricolour should have been black, white, and red, but you used the black, gold, and red flag used in modern Germany.
