December 7th, 1941 is one of the most infamous dates in history but it's not the full story of how and why these two Pacific Empires of Japan and the US came to blows. Instead, the Path to Pearl Harbor was a crooked one, fraught with tense meetings, cultural misunderstandings, and dismissed warnings that led us into WWII.

Did we get something wrong in our "Path to Pearl Harbor" video? Is there a particular character you wanted to hear more about? Feel free to ask our Extra History writer Rob it HERE and get a shout-out in our Extra History Lies Episode!

Let's just say some decisions made by the U.S. Government towards Asian immigrants in the late 19th Century would rather have clashed with modern attitudes. 1848 14th February In the Kingdom of France, in the Early Hours, Lamartine comes to the Balcony of the Hôtel de Ville, and, Followed by a Euphoric Cheering from the Crowd, Announces the Proclamation of the French Republic. 1851 2nd December In the Second Italian Republic, Troops Occupy Strategic Positions in Ravenna, Arrest top Opposition Leaders and Declare the Italian Parliament Dissolved. President Napoleone di Buonaparte Declares that a new Constitution is being Framed and says he Intends to Restore the “System Established by the First Consul.” 8th December In the Second Italian Republic, 32 Italian Regions are Placed under a State of Alert, and Opponents are Arrested and some are Forced to Flee. Within a few Days, the Rebellious Areas are brought under Control. Aureliano Cavelli is Forced to Flee to France, and from there to the Island of Jersey in the where he takes up Residence with his Family in the Town of Saint Peter Port. 20th December In the Second Italian Republic, a Referendum, held Nationwide, Asking Voters whether or not they Approve the continuation of Authority of President Napoleone di Buonaparte and to Delegate the Powers Required to Produce a new Constitution, is Approved by 7,481,231% of Voters, with 642,292% Voting against. The Official Tally, as well as the Nature of the Vote, is Disputed by Leftists such as Aureliano Cavelli. 1853 17th February In the Greater Italian Republic, by Decree of President Napoleone di Buonaparte, Newspapers Dealing with Political and Social Issues are Forbidden from Publishing without Permission and the List of Press Offences is Expanded and Fines are Increased. 1904 In the United States, Sir Roger Casement, a Former British Diplomat who has Grown Disillusioned with the Empire, and Embraced the Nationalist Cause, Travels to the United States Hoping to Secure Funding from Irish Americans and Support from French Diplomats. On his Visits, he Meets with both Senior Irish Americans and French Officials, but Progress is Slow. Through his Friendship with Men such as John Bulmer Hobson, a Leading Member of both the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers, he Establishes Connections with Clan na Gael. Elements of the Suspicious Clan na Gael do not Completely Trust Casement because he is not a Member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and holds Views they Regard as being too Moderate, while others, such as John Quinn, Regard him as being too Extreme. John Devoy, who is Initially Hostile to Casement due to his Part in Conceding Control of the Irish Volunteers to John Redmond, is Won over in Early June, and Joseph McGarrity, another Clan Leader, becomes Devoted to Casement and Remains so. The Howth Gun ~ Running Operation in 1905, which Casement helps to Organise and Finance [with a Loan from Alice Stopford Green] Further Enhances his Reputation. 1905 26th April In the Kingdom of Great Britain, in Broad Daylight, a Ship Pulls up at the Dock in Howth, County Dublin, where it is Met by a Group of Irishmen and Women Equipped with Wheelbarrows and Carts. Among them is Constance Markievicz, the First Woman to be Elected to the Westminster Parliament. Under her Direction, and the other Leaders of the Group, the Ship starts to Unload its Cargo: 1,900 Lebel Rifles. Markievicz, and those Assisting her, are Irish Nationalists. With the Irish Unionist U.V.F. now Armed, Thanks to its Own Gun ~ Running Operation, the Nationalists are trying to keep up, but the News of Guns being taken away in Wheelbarrows Spreads quickly, and Police and Soldiers Mobilise to stop the Illegal drop offs. A Crowd Gathers Shouting, someone Throws a Punch, and a Brawl Ensues. Amid the Confusion, most of the Guns make it Ashore, Disappearing under Floorboards and into Attics to be Retrieved Later. The Irish Volunteers are now Armed. A Revolt is Simmering, and there is One Group Determined to make it Boil over: the Irish Republican Brotherhood, One of the Main Backers of the Irish Volunteers, though it doesn’t fully Control them, who have been Advocating for an Armed Uprising. 1907 3rd April In the Russian Republic, Maria Bochkareva, a Colonel of the White Army and a Heroine of the Fifth Great Global War, has Recently Requested that the Government Allow Formation of the First Women Division by Combining Existing Women’s Battalions of Death which should, Later, Serve as a Basis for the Formation of Women’s Corps. Some Generals Argue that Accepting this Proposal will Surely Boost the Strength of their Army and, not to Forget, Significant Propaganda Value, but Conservative Elements in the White Armed Forces Unwilling to change the Status Quo have to be taken into Account as well. President Kerensky Decides to Allow the Formation of the First Women’s Division of Death. 1936 19th June In the Russian SFSR, Author Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, better Known under his Pen Name Maxim Gorky, Passes away in Moscow at the Age of 68 from Pneumonia. A Fellow Traveller of the Bolsheviks, he Experienced Oppression under the Tsarist Regime and for a Time he Closely Alligned himself with Lenin and Alexander Bogdanov’s Bolshevik Wing of the Party. Before his Success as an Author, he Travelled Widely across the Russian Empire, changing Jobs Frequently, Experiences which would, later, Influence his Writings. His most Famous Works will be his Early Short Stories, Written in the 1890s, [“Chelkash,” “Old Izergil,” and “Twenty ~ Six Men and a Girl”] Plays “The Philistines,” [1901] “The Lower Depths,” [1902] and “Children of The Sun,” [1905] a Poem, “The Song of The Stormy Petrel,” [1901] his Autobiographical Trilogy “My Childhood,” [1913] “In The World,” [1916] “My Universities,” [1923] and a Novel, Mother. [1906] Gorky himself Judged some of these Works to be Failures, and Mother in Particular will be Heavily Criticised as Gorky’s worst, however, there will be Warmer Judgements of his less well ~ Known Post ~ Revolutionary Works, such as the Novels “The Artamonov Business” [1925] and “The Life of Klim Samgin,” [1925 ~ 1936] the Latter of which will be Considered Gorky’s Masterpiece and will sometimes be Viewed by Critics as a Modernist Work. For a Significant Part of his Life, he was Exiled from Russia. In 1932, he Returned on the Personal Invitation of Joseph Stalin and Lived there until his Death in June 1936. As he Narrowly Followed his Son in Death, many Think that his Sudden Death could be due to the changing Political Atmosphere in Russia. In the Greater Manchurian Empire, the Reaction in Manchuria is… Interesting. Denied Participation in the Olympics, Manchuria, instead, sends a Delegation to the People's Olympiad, which has been Cancelled due to the Generals’ Rising. The People's Loyalties are Torn between Cheering for China and being Afraid to do so due to their Awakening Sense of Manchu Nationalism. Perhaps more Worryingly for President Zhang are the Increasingly loud Calls for “Re ~ Unification now!” 1937 1st May In the Greater Manchurian Empire, a Massive Invasion, Spearheaded by Armoured Columns, Rolls across the Borders of Manchuria. The Chinese are Discomforted to find that the Japanese have been Experimenting with the World’s First Wire ~ Guided Anti ~ Tank Missiles, which takes a Heavy Toll on the Chinese Armour, but the Sheer Weight of Numbers Gradually Forces the Japanese Back until they Establish a Stable Front in Central Manchuria. Meanwhile, the rest of the World Watches, but does not get Involved. “Let the Yellow Men Kill each other, it’s no Concern of ours,” the Prevailing Attitude of the World’s Governments seems to be. 1961 12th April In the Russian SFSR, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes the First Human to Enter Outer Space. Gagarin Launches from Baikonur Cosmodrome at 6:07 A.M. and Orbits Terra once in his Vostok 1 Space Capsule before Re ~ Entering the Atmosphere and Ejecting at 23,000 Feet and Parachuting to the Ground at 10:55 A.M., 15 Miles Southwest of the City of Engels in Russia’s Saratov Oblast. He is Lauded as a National Hero upon his Safe Return and an International Celebrity, Noted for his Charismatic Smile. 1970 In the Confederate States, while being Driven Towards his Inauguration in an Open ~ Topped Limousine, a Gunman Opens Fire from the Crowd Lining the Streets. Before he is Subdued, he Manages to Fire Six Pistol Shots at the Limousine. The Driver of the Limousine is Killed by a Shot to the Head, and President ~ Elect Martin Luther King, Jr. is Wounded in his Right Arm. Miraculously, Vice ~ President ~ Elect Jesse Jackson Escapes Unharmed. Despite his Injuries, President ~ Elect King Gamefully Refuses Immediate Treatment or to hold the Inauguration in a more Secure, indoor Location, as is Traditional. The Two Board another Car and Proceed to the Capitol, where the Inauguration takes Place as Scheduled, albiet a few Minutes Late. Martin Luther King, Jr. is Sworn into Office as the 19th President of the Confederate States of America, and Jesse Louis Jackson is Sworn in as Vice ~ President. The Pictures taken this Day of President King Raising his Bloody Right Hand as he takes the Oath of Office will become some of the most Famous taken during the 20th Century. 1982 On the Moon, to Assess the Potential Viability of a Lunar Base, the Central Alliance Space Project [the Joint Byzantine/Russian Space Programme] sends a Series of Unmanned Exploratory Vehicles to the Moon. Some Probes Photograph the Entire Lunar Surface from Orbit, others Land and do Tests of Lunar Soil and Rocks. What these Probes Reveal is very Exciting. Water Ice is Discovered in Craters on the Dark Lunar North and South Poles. And, Additionally, it is found that Lunar Soil and Rocks Contain High Concentrations of many Valuable Minerals and other Materials, Including the Isotope Helium ~ 3, which are Relatively Rare on Earth, and which Nuclear Engineers Believe may be the Key to Developing a Viable Nuclear Fusion Reactor, which is seen as Essential to Meeting Humanity’s Future Energy needs. The Discovery of these Materials…which are not Announced to the rest of the World…Convinces the Central Alliance Space Project to go Forward with its Moon Base Project. 1984 6th February In the United Sumerian States, during Dhuhr Prayer Time, a Car Bomb Explodes outside the Central Bank of Sumer, Killing 6 People [Four Sumerians and Two Palestinians], Injuring 12 People and Damaging the Bank. Within the next Hour, the Kuwaiti Parliament Building is Bombed by a Suicide Truck Bomb, Killing Four Guards and Two Government Workers. The Reason for the low Body Count is that the Suicide Bomber has Targeted a less Populated Area. The Shuaiba Petrochemical Plant Attack Kills no One and does not set off the Planned Chain Reaction of Explosions. Had the Chain Reaction Kicked off, Oil Production within Sumer would have been Crippled and Destroyed the Water Supply of Sumer. The next Hour, Two Car Bombs are Detonated at the Electrical Control Centre and the Sumerian International Airport, Followed by a Second Car Bomb Detonating 30 Minutes Later, no One [mostly American Workers] is Killed due to the Fact that the American Workers Hide in their Buildings and do not Investigate the First Car Bomb, which is how the Attack had been Planned anyway. The only Deadly Attack will be the Sumer Tower, with 13 People being Killed by a Car Bomb. The Final Car Bomb is found outside the Sumer Petroleum Corporation Headquarters and Defused. In the Maya Kingdom, a Nuclear Fission Plant Several Hundred Kilometres from Tikal Experiences a Meltdown in the worst Nuclear Accident in Human History, with 90 Immediate Deaths, 22,000 Attributable Deaths over the next 20 Years, and an Estimated 290,000 People Exposed to Dangerous Levels of Radiation. 1990 On the Moon, in Planning for the Eventual Construction of a Moon Base, the Central Alliance Space Project Plans to send a Series of Unmanned “Cargo Vessels” full of Supplies [Several each Year, full of Food, Fuel, Water, Tools, and Construction Machinery, Prefabricated and Pre ~ Pressurised Habitat Modules and other Items that they will need to Establish a Base] to the Moon, where they will Remain in Orbit. These Vessels will be Designed to Dock with each other by Remote Control, and each Successive Ship will Dock with the last to Form a continuous Chain. Several Launches will be made each Year for Several Years until the Desired Stockpile of Supplies has been Established. It is also Planned to Design a Space Shuttle which will be used to Ferry the Supplies to the Surface when the Time is Right to begin Construction of the Lunar Colony. These Plans are not put into Operation Immediately, however.
