They speak to the people of Dublin. Telling them this is the first day of a new nation, The Irish Republic but as night falls the British government works to funnel soldiers into the city. I did indeed mean in the broad strokes of violence sense. In that respect, then you should be able to see it. 1848 In the Kingdom of Great Britain, Irish Nationalist Activist John Mitchel is Sentenced to Transportation to Australia for a Period of 14 Years for “Seditious Libel” by a Jury he himself Dismisses as “Packed.” [as “not Empanelled even According to the Law of England.”] 1903 In the Russian Empire, Nickolus Tesla Tests his Tesla Coil by Powering Half of Moscow from 50 Miles away. Impressed, the Russian Government Funds his Work and begins Producing the Coils. 1906 24th August In the United States, with the United States yet to Pick a side in the Fifth Great Global War, French Officials in America are Working hard behind the Scenes to Expand their Country’s Influence and Disrupt American Ties with the Central Powers. At the French Club in New York City, Two Groups of Men File in and take their Seats, the Air Tense with Expectation. One of the Two Groups Consists of French Dignitaries: a Diplomat, a Military Attaché, a Banker, and a Journalist. The other Group Consider themselves a Diplomatic Delegation, Albiet from a State which doesn’t Exist…yet. They are Irish Nationalists, some American ~ Born, but others from Ireland. The Nationalists make their Proposal: they want French Assistance in Defeating their Mutual Enemy, the British, and, in Exchange, the Nationalists Ask for only Two things: Weapons and Military Expertise. The French Ambassador Listens Intently, and then Promises to Contact his Superiors to see what can be done. If he can Raise a Revolt in Ireland, then the War might Really be over by Christmas. 1907 In the Russian Empire, the State Duma of Russian America Votes Overwhelmingly in Favour of Gaining Independence from the Russian Empire and the Establishment of an Alyeskan Republic. 1944 In the United States, U.S. Military Intelligence Learns that the Confederates are Researching the Possibility of Producing a Sun Bomb. When a Delegation of Physicists had Approached President Franklin D. Roosevelt about this during his First Year in Office, he had Dismissed the Idea as a “Money ~ Sucking Boondoggle Waiting to happen,” however, now he has found out that at Least One of the U.S.’s Neighbours is Seriously Working on the Idea, he Decides, Reluctantly, that the U.S. must do likewise. With the Cooperation of Congress, a Secret Research Programme is Instituted. 1967 In the Russian SFSR, the First Joint Byzantine/Russian Attempt at a Full ~ Earth Orbit Launched by the Central Alliance Space Project…also the First Attempt at a Multi ~ Man Mission…Fails Spectacularly when their Spacecraft Disintegrates upon Re ~ Entry into the Atmosphere and Crashes somewhere in the Siberian Tundra. However, before their Unfortunate Demise, Co ~ Pilots Vasily Korshikov and Maximus Aulis Locutius Orbit the Earth Twenty Times. People the World over Mourn the Loss of the Intrepid Explorers and the Central Alliance Space Project is put on hold while an Investigation is Conducted into the Cause of the Accident. 1969 11th January In the Russian SFSR, the Crew of a Russian Soyuz-7K LOK Launched from a Lenin N1 make a Trip around Luna, Similar to the Apollo 8 Mission the Previous Year. General ~ Secretary Vyacheslav Molotov Announces Plans for a Lunar Base within Two Years, Followed by Trips to Venus and Mars Shortly afterwards.

I wonder if, in these set of episodes, it would make sense to show some maps of Dublin to show how relatively close these events were. I live in Dublin, and can locate the different streets and places named, but I see the episodes with a map handy to get an idea of distances.

It's war crime time!

...I'm sorry, did the British just *shell* an Irish city that wasn't even completely in uprising?! Yes the Nationalists were there, but it seemed like most of the civilian population weren't on their side. That's got to have some from of repercussion.

I agree, while the Easter Rebellion is definitely an important footnote, the history of Ireland during the first half of the twentieth century is so much more interesting. The Anglo-Irish war and the following Irish Civil War with such charismatic and complex characters like Michael Collins and Eamon De Valera whose impact on Irish history are still felt in Ireland to this day.

In what respect? Other than the broad strokes of violence, I don’t really see it. Japanese militarism was a consolidation of power within an existing civilian government and transforming it into a military government to serve the military. It’s almost feudal. The Easter Rising is nascent nationalism that kicks off broadening its base. It forms the core of how Ireland becomes a Republic. I’m rather disappointed the series hasn’t wrapped up the fighting and moved into the aftermath, which is far more interesting. Missing the history for the battle. If you’re looking for parallels in modern Ireland, Eamon de Valera pushing the Free State into the Republic, in broad strokes, has much more in common with Japanese militarism IMHO. Even then, not really that close.

Anyone else sensing deja vu? [from the Japanese Nationalism series a while ago?]
