For drawing backgrounds, never be afraid to use references! I sometimes take photos of my own and use them. Creating a good atmosphere with lighting can be done through different colours and contrast. Colours each have distinct moods of their own (such as blue being sad or calming). Harsh Contrast helps create a more dramatic tone. This can be done by creating a dark background and bright light source, creating emphasis on a certain area (I usually like having brighter eyes/faces)
