Suggestion Survey is Open through 1/20!

Our theme for the month of January is Eastern Europe

We realized it had been a fair bit of time since we checked in on the north east part of the globe and so, this month is dedicated to all those countries that are considered to be in Eastern Europe.
Want to hear about the tsars of Russia, or know what made Ivan so terrible? Want to know why Poland is considered the phoenix of Europe? Or maybe you're curious about the Baltics?

Some notes about suggestions:

How about something covering the teutonic order and the northern crusade's keeping with the Saladin theme in a way plus alot of people don't know much about that area of Estonia and Russian history back when it was all the Novgorod republic

Heath Knowles

I dictated most of it.

I hope you wrote that on your PC. Can’t imagine writing something that long on a phone.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Lenin, Stalin, Marx. It would have to be a series. There's too much that happened to squeeze into less than 10 minutes. Make it about Solzhenitsyn directly. His life before, during, and after his time in the Gulag. His Gulag Archipelago is one of the most important books of the 20th century. It brought down not only the Soviet Union, but it blew the foundation out of communism and Marxism as a whole. It details how the proclivity of individuals to for-go their personal transcendent experience in order to lie and deceive, as a community, and to identify as tribal groups and turn on each other lead to the most realized example of hell and evil that the world has ever seen.

I feel like this would probably end up as a one-off. I doubt there is a single person or series of people to build a narrative around to follow them, and cataloging all the atrocities of the Gulags would get pretty trite.

FarEasternMyth

My time has come. The Black army of the Russian Civil War. Join Nestor Makhno and the surprisingly scrappy Black army as they attempt to take on the Monarchist White army and the Communist Red army in order to build their own independent society around the principles of Anarchism.

FarEasternMyth

I was torn between suggesting the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the baltic crusade, ie the last pagan realm in Europe. But I chose to suggest the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth this time. :)

What happened in the Soviet Union started before the turn of the century with the Russian revolution. The fact that you've never heard of it means that it's even more important that you learn. Especially since you're here. You're here because of a thirst for knowledge and this particular part of history being blind to you is extremely telling.

I think that is too late in history sadly, they only do stuff capped at the 1930s. (Also I am saying this because I have never heard of this and just guessing it is after 1930s.)

Do a series on The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to cover all of the horrors within the Soviet Union during the 20th century. With the release of call of duty modern warfare's war zone mode the term Gulag has come back into popular culture and it'd be good if people understood where that term came from and what horrors and atrocities it represents.
