End of the Samurai - Gangs of Kyoto - Extra History #2

Each person we name is like a whole episode unto themselves. Sakuma Shozan is fascinating and also developed Japan's first seismometer as well as the telegraph

I got very confused, about halfway through, not able to remember which names meant what, seconds or minutes before. I'm actually "on the short bus" for a variety of reasons, all from the neck up, so you probably shouldn't adjust your style for people like me. I would need tool-tip-style text, over each person, indicating who was pictured, and who wasn't. I still got a lot out of this, but not as much as I'd hoped. :)

Technically during his lifetime an emperor is known as "the Emperor." While in the West we have no problem referring to an Emperor by his given name (such as Hirohito), in Japan, it is taboo to refer to an Emperor by his given name. After the emperor dies he is referred to by a posthumous name, Shōwa in the case of Hirohito. The former emperor Akihito (who abdicated in 2019) is given a special title which is translated to English as "Emperor Emeritus" instead of referring to him by his given name.

Yes he would have

Lady Bug

Also, weren't the emperors given the era name only posthumously? So at the time Emperor Meiji lived, he would have been known by his born name, no?
