Asked my wife to review the details: specifically, it's Babylonian wisdom poetry with two prose sections added on as an intro and outro, all of which we know was written post-Babylonian exile. Which means that the version of the story we have was written millenia after it claims the story itself took place, and its very possible that the intro (with God and Satan making deals) and the outro (with Job gaining a new family and all of that) were added on by someone else other than whoever it was that wrote the actual Babylonian wisdom poetry that makes up the middle.

Pretty much what a lot of people don't realize is that the version of the story we have wasn't written by a prophet, it was written to be an ancient novel. That doesn't mean it's not good for scripture or education, or even mean that Job and what happened to him necessarily did or did not actually happen, just that the actual written record we get this story from is more akin to Dante's Divine Comedy rather than, say, the books of Moses. I've seen people stretch themselves into knots either trying to justify how God and Satan talked to each other or explain how this story totally proves God is some sort of sociopath, when the real answer to "Why did God make this deal with Satan?" is probably just "because the author thought that would be a cool addition to the story".

This was a Jewish myth before it was a Christian one. It would be nice to see a context episode or an Extra History tie-in about the history and interpretation of this text! And I didn't even see that the next EH topic is spirituality! Going to suggest a history of Judaism!

2020-10-28 20:00:27 +0000 UTCGod thinks a spouse and kids are disposable and can easily be replaced. Also, this is the only time Satan killed people. Compare that to the many deaths caused by God and you have Satan being the hero by trying to stop an abusive relationship.
