Suggestion Survey is Open through 10/31!

Our theme for the month of October is That Old Time Religion

This time, we're focusing on matters spiritual—from the spread of Buddhism along the silk road, to the Proteastant Reformation, to the seance-tables of Spiritualism.

Want to hear about the Jewish pirates of the Caribbean, who exacted vengeance on the Spanish in the wake of their displacement by the Inquisition? What about the bizarre tale of China's Taiping Rebellion, where a self-proclaimed "brother of Jesus" established an autonomous state that nearly toppled the Qing Dynasty? How about the dark history of European witch hunts or Russian Orthodox schism, that created the New Rite, and made the Old Believers a persecuted minority?

Or something else you always wanted to know! Provided there's a religious component to the topic, it's open season.

Some notes about suggestions:

That makes me wanna know more. I hope my suggestion gets the vote 🗳

I suggested an overall history of the Israelite people and Judaism. Which of course is FAR too large a topic for six episodes but it's worth a try.

Joshua Evans-Lowell

From what I understand, that's partially true but the library wasn't burned in a single event so much as it declined over the centuries.

I'd absolutely love a series on the Mississippian civilizations but it seems pretty tangentially related to the topic.

The Zoroastrianism topic mentioned above is a good choice but I decided to vote for the religion of the Mound Builders of southeastern America. Their religion was centered around sacrifices, Falcon warriors and dancers, etc. Several mound builder kingdoms built platform mounds from Florida and Texas to Minnesota and Wisconsin in much the same way that many kingdoms in Christendom built churches all over Europe. One of the more well-known mound builder kingdoms was the Natchez which was at its zenith in the 1550s under Quigualtam and lasted til the wars with the French in the 1730s.

Samuel D Tahami

I want to hear about the lesser-known topic of the Taiping Rebellion

Nibin

I suggested the burning of the library of Alexandria. From what I understand, the library was burned on Christian belief that it was pagan

I'd choose Zoroastrianism, one of the first religions of Persia, it isn't talked about much. Zoroastrianism is a pre-Islam religion, founded by Zoroaster in the 6th century BCE. It's one of the oldest religions, which is still practiced today.

Christopher Percy

I went with the spread of Islam. It's been touched on in the series on Ibn Battuta, as well as one episode in the Mali series, but I'd like to see a much deeper dive into how the spread of Islam and the nature of that spread affected the various cultures it spread to--as well as how it in turn was affected by those cultures. Islam as practiced in Saudi Arabia, for example, differs from Islam as practiced in Malaysia, which in turn differs from Islam as practiced in Tanzania, and so on.

I went with the religions of the African Diaspora. Many regional faiths throughout the slave-holding areas of the Americas are an interesting blend of African and western faiths along with other spiritual traditions and have guided how many of these areas have developed over the years. Plus, who wouldn't want an episode on Mardi Gras and the many variations of voodoo that exist throughout the Caribbean

David Chuhay

Yeah I also suggested the Great Schism.

Jonathan Luoto

The Spanish Inquisition. Probably one of the most infamous institutions in history... whose infamy has been very exaggerated. Althought the Catholic church and the Spanish Empire did a lot of questionable stuff in the age, both Protestant and English propaganda at the time, and its romanticization in the next centuries, have painted an image very distant of historical truth in many aspects. From their views on witchcraft, to their methods of torture, to their judicial procedures. It would be a great opportunity to throw some light on the truths and myths of it all.

The Great Schism - the separation between east and west ans an important continuation to the Christianity schisms series that was previously aired
