The Haitian Revolution - The Slave Society - #1

The Haitian Revolution is a unique historical event in many ways. It was both an offshoot of the French Revolution, but also an anti-colonialist revolution. It was also the second American nation to successfully win its independence. But before we can talk about the Revolution itself, we have to talk about how influential Haiti was to France's economy and how it's complicated social structure primed it for revolt and revolution. Because here, in the colony built upon the countless bodies of the enslaved, sugar is king. But not for long.

Murder of civilians, sure, but no slave revolt has ever involved "cold-blooded" anything.

As said in the Policing London Lies video, check out Mike Duncan's revolutions podcast season 4 for more in-depth coverage on the Haitain Podcast. https://www.revolutionspodcast.com/2015/11/index.html

Even if it will be it’s shouldn’t be covered in detail as Napoleon didn’t care for the colonies that much and invested in people and mainland France rather than colonies and it as crap that he sold Louisiana because of Haitians

Victor Heinsberg

I know literal jack about Haiti and especially when it comes to our relationship with them. So I'm very interested in this series :)

Azure Mengelkamp

I love that this is a topic. About 6-7 years ago my dad started researching this conflict as the basis for a historical wargame and as with all of his games he has a focus on teaching history as much as creating an interesting strategy game experience. It even looks like it'll be published this year potentially: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/88142/black-eagles I look Forward to sharing this video series with him! :) This was such a fascinating and paradigm shifting episode of the history of Colonialism and slavery in the Americas and it's repercussions shaped the world in some pretty important ways.

John Poniske

This is awesome. I can't wait to see how this whole ordeal turned out.

Anders Stengård

I Assume Napoleon's attempt to Reconquer the Island [as well as the cold ~ Blooded Murder of defenceless Civilians by the Revolutionaries] will be covered here?

Martin Verran

Yes! Caribbean history and the absolute horror that was Carinbbean slavery. I have waited for an episode that covers it.
