Viking Expansion - The Serpent-Riders - Extra History - #1

In a house by the sea, somewhere in Norway, a baby is born. History will not remember his name, and no skald will sing of his deeds. His family are not lords or warriors, yet he—and people like him—will spread Scandinavian influence from Constantinople to western lands unseen by Europeans. For this village prizes one skill above all others.

The father takes his newborn son and lays him in a crib—a crib shaped like a boat.

This video was so good. I love the simple beginnings you guys do for these to really give a good grasp of the time period and how life existed.

I have a detail related question: would the Scandinavians follow the North African coast or the European coast when they went into the Med?

Ryan Wojciechowski

The "Face of Europe" cracked me up! I know some things about Vikings (who doesn't?), but I'm learning new things about them now! Those Knarrs are pretty cool!

Cindy Franklin

Thank you for showing a different side of scandinavians during the viking age. Most people seem to think they were all warriors. No doubt the blame is on pop culture and the fact that so few sources of information remain. All in all a great episode with a really nice arc.

WOOOOOT!

The Fire Piper

That's one of your best episodes so far. It's good to look at the 'other side' of history - the ordinary people and how they lived.

Tammy Spiller

Loved the episode guys. So rarely do people talk about the other side of Scandinavians during this time. People think of them and all they think are viking, blood, steel and the like. But they were so much more then that.
