Julie d'Aubigny - Duelist, Singer, Radical - Extra History

Julie d'Aubigny lived during an unusual time in 17th-century France when political and cultural norms were shifting. She was allowed to exist openly as a bisexual woman pursuing her swordsmanship and singing talents in the court of King Louis XIV.

(No worries, Majapahit Lies + music video is coming next week!)

Very good! Wow - she packed a lot of living into a sadly short life.

..... Why does this sound VERY similar to the plot of the 1979 anime “The Rose of Versailles?”.... *research*.... Dang it..... Close, but no cigar.

Life goals! O.O

So, not a fan of this type of episode. While definitely an interesting person, don't see that she had much impact on history, either in her own time or in ours. Still, entertaining story.

Honestly, we don't have a good way to know this for a fact. By modern-day standards no, we would say this could not have been consensual even if she said she wanted it, simply because she was still a child when the relationship took place. But because this was a fairly common practice at the time/society she lived in (i.e. young girls marrying older men), it is technically possible that it could have been something she fully agreed to. We don't know very much about the nature of her relationship with the Comte d’Armagnac.

A woman after my own heart! What an amazing person!!

According to wikipedia, the initial mistress/marriage arrangement occurred when she was 14. Adulthoood started a lot younger in those days... But still, I agree that she managed to squeeze a phenomenal amount of life into those two short decades.

Follow up freak out: 33?!? WHAT? 33?!?!?!?!?! I thought this was a 4 decade adulthood, she died at 33???

So maybe it's just the art style but was the 'relationship' between Julie and the Comp consensual or not?

Ryan Wojciechowski

Wonderful bait & switch delivering the Zero Hecks Given crime story! Please do this more.
