How about the brazilian Crisis and unenployment because of Lula and Dilma rouseff

Lumina

Halifax Explosion

Lewis Farberman

I did. Suggested it again. Just in time in fact. I almost didn’t make it.

Lewis Farberman

I had already submitted, and now I wish I could change it. I'd like to do the Battle of Cap Bon instead. That horrible battle in 468 in north Africa that was mentioned in the first season of Justinian and Theodora.

Cindy Franklin

How about the Great Depression of British Agriculture? Eliminating tariffs and shattering an entire section of the British economy would qualify as a "disaster." Not to mention it's a great way to examine the benefits and disadvantages of free trade.

Benjamin Patz

Wanggongchang explosion, over 20,000+ deaths, occurred in 1626, half of Beijing was in the blast zone and was the closest thing to a nuke at that time.

Hugh Mccabe

I agree that this is an interesting and significant topic. Spain avoided both World Wars and yet was in political chaos for about 50 years; arguably still suffering today.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Halifax Explosion

Joël Quenneville

I don't know why modern Peru has anything to do with this, but I am interested in the Time of Troubles.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

it's more cultural than just artistic, but I am interested in the history of inquisitions.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

maybe Nicholas If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned Barbon will return for a cameo.

The Disaster of the 98: The end of the Spanish-American war brought a crisis of identity to the whole of Spain. Not only had shown the lack of it's military in a succession of clumsy defeats that shouldn't had happened so easily, but it also meant practically losing it's empire and it's national pride. It brought Spain from being a world player to an isolated nation, that not even today, had been able to recover any semblance of international recognition. It brought also a cultural renovation with the Generation of the 98, that began exploring all the questions about spanish society that had been practically ignored before. It brought a sense of dread and pessimism about the future, and changed the view of spanish society about itself. A change of view that's still present even today.

JohnnyElRojo

What does a volcano in what is now Peru have to do with the rise of the Romanovs? Possibly quite a bit. I suggested the Time of Troubles, an era of severe political instability in Russia.

General Luigi

The Halifax Explosion, Jonestown flood or New Madrid Earthquake? Which one?

Rossum

I decided to stick with Islamic Iconoclasm. I know this maybe a controversial topic but, I think it is important to recognise what has been lost in terms of the art that showed the history of the various cultures that existed before the rise of Islam. Also to recognise why this act of Iconoclasm occurred and continues to occur, as James pointed out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-GgknZYu3s From a point of view, this can be considered an artistic disaster.

Xenin

This time, I proposed the twin disasters that struck London in the 1660s: The Great Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of 1666.

Julia Augusta

1556 Shaanxi earthquake: an earthquake that killed almost 1 million people and permanently weakened the Chinese Ming Dynasty.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Pyrrhic War: such a disaster that it created a new word for it.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

I want to hear about one of the most disatrous rules in history, Ranavalona I. She oversaw Madagascar's population being halved, with millions of people dead yet I'd never heard of her before looking up topics for this.

GooGhoul

Someone suggested the Halifax Explosion the last time we had a poll. That sounded like a great idea so I submitted it this time :)
