The Haitian Revolution: Listen to the Voice of Liberty
They all attended a secret Vodou ceremony, conducted during a tropical storm. And when the enslaved people returned home, the rising began. Though free people of color were already pushing for greater rights, the dynamic had just changed—St. Domingue was now witness to the largest slave revolt since Spartacus. The conflict would continue 13 years and become a proxy war for colonial powers—but against all odds, the rebels of Haiti would emerge with their own nation.
Dr. Sun Yat-sen: Rebel on the Run
Gunshots echo through Hong Kong. An assassin flees across the rooftops. Behind him, the mastermind of the Guangzhou uprising lies dead. The murder leaves a 34-year-old doctor named Sun Yat-sen as the most prominent revolutionary in China. For a decade after, Dr. Sun will travel the world writing, speaking, and organizing resistance. He’ll live in hiding and be kidnapped by secret agents. Because Sun is a dangerous man: he’s about to bring 2,000 years of Imperial rule crashing down.
The Mexican Revolution: Land and Liberty!
It has been nearly a century since Mexico threw off the yoke of Spanish colonialism, yet wealthy landowners still rule the country like feudal lords. Its president, Porfirio Díaz, has refused to step down for 35 years. No more. In the south, General Emiliano Zapata leads an army of peasants fighting for land reform. In the north, Francisco “Pancho” Villa makes cavalry raids on counterrevolutionaries. In a decade of chaos, a revolutionary president will die, US troops will intervene, and Mexico will emerge from civil war as a new nation.
The Protestant Reformation: An Uprising of the Spirit
Wycliffe, Hus, Luther, Calvin—firebrands that shaped their time and ours. This series will explore the chaos of the Protestant Reformation through the lens of the ideas that shaped it, showing how questions of the soul set Europe alight and turned brother against brother. But it will also explore women reformers who have only recently captured historians’ attention—from political patrons like Marguerite de Navarre to academic debaters like Argula von Grumbach.

2018-07-28 15:42:34 +0000 UTCI now know why French Revolution was not put in......It was Walpole.

2018-07-22 22:58:45 +0000 UTCYou know, that could actually be a good argument for NOT voting for the Protestant Reformation; it leaves open the possibility of later giving any of these elements (the Hussites, Marguerite de Navarre, etc) the more focused attention they deserve.

2018-07-22 21:51:06 +0000 UTCWrote a report on the Mexican revolutions way back in elementary school. Would love to see EH do a series on that tangled mess, but all of the above sound interesting.

2018-07-22 00:22:43 +0000 UTCI know this is revolutions but i really hope you guys do a series on the 1837 rebellions of canada! Theres alot of interesting stories and battles hidden in there and you guys still lack a series on Canada :p

2018-07-21 21:17:41 +0000 UTCThat was my suggestion too! :)

2018-07-20 20:51:02 +0000 UTCEven Chinese communism party and chairman Mao Zedong regard Sun Yat-sen as the pioneer of Chinese revolution. His mausoleum and memorial hall remain intact even during the notorious cultural revolution. Today, still a lot of roads are named Yat-sen (or 中山 Zhongshan) in China and chinatowns around the world.
Bell Deng
2018-07-20 19:56:00 +0000 UTCI like all of these options! I hope you guys get the chance to do them eventually. (Still picked one though)

2018-07-20 19:04:15 +0000 UTCYay Mexico. Viva Mexico! :)

2018-07-20 18:57:34 +0000 UTCVIVA VILLA! My suggestion got posted!

2018-07-20 18:40:20 +0000 UTCthey're all good: can't we have all of them? the votes are neck & neck.
Thomas Alfred Weaver
2018-07-20 18:38:25 +0000 UTCWell you earned my vote
GooGhoul
2018-07-20 17:56:48 +0000 UTCWow close race. Though I guess I should be used to that by now. I'm not surprised neither of my suggestions (Corsican Revolution, nor 2nd Industrial Revolution) are up there but it'd be nice to see an oddball option make it more often.
GooGhoul
2018-07-20 17:55:10 +0000 UTCAll of them! :d For the Revolution!
SparkyDJM1
2018-07-20 16:39:40 +0000 UTCIt's a Shame that the Russian Revolution isn't Included in this List, Considering how completely that Event changed the World. I Guess Sun Yat-sen will do for now. Or maybe Pancho Villa. Or maybe the Protestant Reformation...oh, whatever, I'll Vote for all of them. I just can't Make my Mind up here.
Martin Verran
2018-07-20 15:10:05 +0000 UTCThere's an argument to be made for the whole "Protestant Reformation" period to cover anything from about 1415 to 1648.
Antti Björklund
2018-07-20 15:02:30 +0000 UTCThe Protestant Reformation and Sun Yat-Sen get my votes.
Antti Björklund
2018-07-20 15:00:47 +0000 UTCSo long as there is a series done about white slavery, an even less covered topic.
Xenin
2018-07-20 11:02:20 +0000 UTC._. All of these are good. Therefore, you must do all of them.

2018-07-20 08:42:49 +0000 UTCDamn it, mine didn't get in. I put the French Revolution, all well, still great picks to choose from.
BlueFanfictionInc
2018-07-20 08:11:42 +0000 UTCWell they mentioned Jan Hus in that description so presumably they'd talk about his role as a forebearer of the Reformation.
Joshua Evans-Lowell
2018-07-20 03:04:32 +0000 UTCI'm definitely all for the Haitian Revolution, although I would think it would make more sense to do a series on the Atlantic Slave Trade first to give some context.
Joshua Evans-Lowell
2018-07-20 03:02:44 +0000 UTCYay! My suggestion came through! Protestant Reformation!
Stephen Watson
2018-07-20 02:45:22 +0000 UTCMan, all of these are really cool and I'd love to see all of them, but if I had to choose, Id go with either Haitian revolution or Protestant reformation
Matt S
2018-07-20 02:22:36 +0000 UTCWow, it's been a long while since I got a topic in I think. This is going to be a tough vote, I'm just glad Mexican Revolution got in for later topics

2018-07-20 01:42:55 +0000 UTCHaitian Revolution, no question! :D
R. Wesley Nipper
2018-07-19 23:20:16 +0000 UTCI really hope we see the Thirty Years War or Gusatvus Adolphus in here eventually.

2018-07-19 23:14:29 +0000 UTCFeature History did a really good video on the Hussite Rebellion, you should check it out.

2018-07-19 23:13:52 +0000 UTCIf you like podcasts you should listen to Mike Duncan's Revolutions episodes on the Haitian Revolution. He did a great job.

2018-07-19 23:09:08 +0000 UTCPersonally rather than the protestant reformation, which is well known, I would prefer if EH covered something more like the Hussite Rebellion.

2018-07-19 22:59:57 +0000 UTCMy suggestion of Haitian Revolution was chosen. This is my first one chosen. Hopefully it wins because it’s a topic I’d love to know more about but I’ll still suggest it next chance I get if not
Aidan Forero
2018-07-19 22:56:31 +0000 UTCUGH! I WANT ALL OF THESE. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO VOTE NOW?

2018-07-19 22:53:41 +0000 UTCWOOO! My Suggestion got in! Please vote for the Haitian Revolution!

2018-07-19 22:23:42 +0000 UTCFor some additional context, we usually get 150-200 suggestions sent in, and we don't remove duplicate topics--if 15 people suggest the Haitian revolution, or if any of those people send the same suggestion each time they do the survey (in a given survey period), then it will naturally have a higher chance of being picked than other suggestions. Currently Rob Rath is picking topics based on a combination of random selection from the list, as well as manually reviewing the list and seeing what people are most interested in. Hopefully that helps! Luck really is a huge factor. I've seen some Patrons who have only been supporting Extra History for a single week, get their topic picked in the next poll, while other Patrons don't see their topic picked until 2+ years in. Another thing to consider is that it's only been within the past 6-ish months that we started basing the polls off *multiple* patron suggestions--for a very long time, we were only incorporating one patron suggestion in each poll, so it took longer for people to see their suggestion pop up. The last few polls we've done have been entirely patron suggestions. Your patronage up to this point is very much appreciated, but unfortunately we can't change our current selection system too much due to the sheer number of patrons we have, and we understand if you're not happy and need to cancel or change your patronage level. --Belinda
Extra History
2018-07-19 22:23:12 +0000 UTCAnd sadly once again, the topic idea I sent isn't one of the ones presented here. *Sighs* makes me wonder if it's worth doing. As for these ideas, well I don't know, hard to say really, I'll have to think on it.

2018-07-19 21:52:16 +0000 UTCYES, YES, YES - Haiti has finally made the poll! Fellow EH fans, I cannot emphasize ENOUGH how important the Haitian Revolution was to Western History, despite how it's only fairly recently been getting the mainstream attention it deserves. As much potential as the other topics may have, I REALLY encourage you all to treat yourselves to some learning more about this very complex and epic story - a very crucial turning point, in the fall of France, the rise of abolitionism, and of the British Empire, and of the path of the United States, to say nothing of being (arguably) the only truly successful slave rebellion in modern history. Vote for the Haitian Revolution!

2018-07-19 21:46:17 +0000 UTCToo many good topics! I always look forward to/hate topic polls xD

2018-07-19 21:37:10 +0000 UTCTangentially, speaking of Jan Hus: Jan Zizka was a real interesting general from the Hussite Wars who doesn't get that much attention. I mean, revolting against the state (And Sigismund... who's an interesting character) and the Catholic Church; the Bohemian revolutionaries lacked knights, but they trained peasants with a discipline and faith regimen, armed them with early uses of flails (previously farm tools) and pikes, as well as crossbows and a really early use of firearms, as well as very early mortars for harassment. They then employed said peasants ability to navigate bumpy roads by armoring wagons and driving them in trains... they would deploy them at a high point where they could, circling them into "wagon forts". They would harass the enemy with mortar fire, causing the enemy knights to charge. They would then shoot out the horses, and since dismounted knights were armored in horse full plate, which was specialized and not made for movement on foot as much, after a charge was over they'd open up the fort, and everyone would run out with flails and pikes and beat the knights to death. I mean, not to mention Jan Zizka was a practically undefeated general, they fended off against numerous crusades from church, and while having one eye for his career, he lost his other eye and still kept winning, only to be killed eventually by the plague. It's great stuff. Would highly recommend the book "Warrior of God: Jan Zizka and the Hussite Revolution" by Victor Verney. That stuff could be a series itself to be honest.
