Thermopylae - East vs. West - Extra History - #2

Why does everyone know the Greek defeat at Thermopylae, but victories like Salamis and Plataea remain obscure? Because it helped define Greek, and thus “western” culture. And that’s thanks to one man: Herodotus.

Twitch Presents classic Doctor Who marathon has pushed everything else aside, which is why I'm so behind on Patreon goodies. Sorry. Thanks for making sure to speak up for the contributions from both sides, from which we all benefit, now. And thanks for pointing out the complexities.

Why do the Persians not have ANY heavily armored infantry? it seems that normally an army doesn't need that many fast infantry troops just some to screen the flanks and act as a reserve force or pursuing. Even if most of your army is light infantry due to cheapness??? it seems that you really need at least some heavy infantry to 1 hold a position for your king as demonstrated during the battles of Issus and Gaugamela And as demonstrated at Marathon a heavily armored infantry really could just smash the more lightly armored infantry in a head to head battle.

Jason, I got your point but still, no one would associate the best of the best elite group with Star Treck Red Shirts. Well, I mean no one but you ;-)

Marc Langlois

But they were considered expendable and anonymous which is what I was referring to as "red shirts". Remember to get posted on the Enterprise you had to go through the Academy and be considered good enough to be assigned to the flagship.

Jason Youngberg

A little bit, yeah.

Levi Whitney

No they were heavy infantry and the elite of the Persian army. They were anything but red shirts.

Sean Sarff

So they're the original Red Shirts.

Jason Youngberg

The Immortals got their nickname because there were always 10,000 of them. If one fell in battle they would replace him with another elite soldier. Supposedly they wore masks to hide their identities so people would believe them unkillable...but that’s either myth or propaganda.

Sean Sarff

I expected the Persians to be wearing Sock and Buskin Masks and having the Spartans killing 10 Persians per second. Maybe 300 is a bit... exaggerated?

Well said
