And the winner is...

The Viking Expansion: From Constantinople to Canada will air later in 2018!

Around 1000 CE, Leif Erikson stepped onto the shores of North America. But his settlements there were only the furthest-flung outposts of the Norse expansion. Centuries of raiding, trading, and light invading had spread Northmen from Byzantium to Greenland—and left legacies we can still see today.

Dynasty Warriors is loosely based on the "Romance of the three Kingdoms" which in itself is very loosely based on real facts, Some of the real events in the Romance are blown out of proportions while others never happened. And given how the communist party in china during the "cultural revolution" destroyed a lot of ancient records of the period any research into that particular topic is pretty difficult. Throw in how th chinese government reacts to people not "truthfully" (read here: not putting them in the best light) representingtheir history... yeah they banned some games and movies for reasons like "doesn't represent chinese values" like that movie about the evacuation at Dunkirk.

Byron Becker

A series on the Armenian genocide would be interesting too, it's a topic I always hear about in passing but never had the time to research personally.

SlothyGuy

Dynasty Warriors is based on a book, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which was sort of a period drama written in the 1300s.

Erik Eldritch

What about (even if it's not straight history) : the different philosophical schools / Philosophists - from Confucius to Kant ? ;)

F. P. P.

There's a Total War Game coming out this Autumn about the Three Kingdoms Period and I'm SOOOOO Hyped up about it!

Martin Verran

Isn't Dynasty Warriors (extremely) loosely based off of that time period? They've done "the history behind the games" sponsored stuff before...

Fenrir

I don’t think there is wrong with Extra Credits to do well known subjects, usually the well known and the most marketable simply are great stories that deserve the atention in all mediums and something can always be added to the topic or it can be looked form a new angle. The issue to me is that the Vikings had one-off episode and 2 sponsored Danelaw episodes and the mythology series already. But I love all exploring so I don’t really mind.

Sara Samaletdin

There's evidence they wore helmets. In any case, those helmets didn't have horns: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_Age_arms_and_armour#Helmet

Antti Björklund

Will you guys ever do anything on the three kingdom Era in China

SlothyGuy

don't be so quick with assuming the Vikings had helmets.

seerpea

Oh, the Envy...

Martin Verran

That imagery comes from Irish depictions of Vikings, since the Irish imagined them as demons with horns on their heads.

Erik Eldritch

I absolutely love the Viking Age, I'm thrilled. Don't forget Norse trade with Arabia and the Kievan Rus. The Helgo Buddha is a fascinating example of the extent of Norse trade.

Erik Eldritch

Omg, I can't believe that it only took my second suggestion to get one of my ideas on this show!

Pope Urban II

This episode sponsored by Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia :3

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Yup! Thats where I found that too! :)

The Fire Piper

Everything - I want to know everything :D :D :D

F. P. P.

Varangian guard, Buddha, History of India/China/Siam ..., 30-Year War, early middle ages in Europe, Elisabethian England, History of the Maya/Aztecs ...

F. P. P.

I heard about that on the NativLang channel but he didn't spend much time on it, mostly used it as a prompt to discuss the differences in the written languages. So I'd like to hear more about that one

Jessica Cheeri

Yes, the stereotypical picture of a viking is that they have horned helmets. That is, of course, historically untrue.

Antti Björklund

helmets?

seerpea

All we need now is the Legend of the Buddha, the Life of Karl Marx, and, fingers crossed, Scott of The Antarctic, and the Sheep shall Rejoice! [Personally I still say Cook Deserves a Series of his Own, though]

Martin Verran

I'll be looking for there not being horns on the viking's helmets!

Antti Björklund

Thank you for at least picking one of my topics, surprised that it beat out lewis and Clark

arthur D. gonzalez-martin

Wasn't there a series recently where a group of patrons banded to get to get the votes for it?

Dani McKenzie

Woot! I finally got a topic I voted for. Only took three years.

Sean Sarff

I voted for Captain Cook, but they were all good choices.

Rossum

Also, we do set up the polls such that people can vote for multiple topics, even all of them if they so wish. Hopefully folks are taking advantage of that feature when indicating their preferences :)

Extra History

IMO, Empire of Mali and History of Non-Euclidean Geometry both fall into that category, and that's just going off the most recent videos we've done. Since patrons do end up choosing the vast majority of the series we make, it's ultimately up to them to choose the lesser-known topics ;) Feel free to campaign in the community for your favorite topics (all of you in general, not just you specifically).

Extra History

You would be surprised on some of the shenanigans the Vikings took part in that is not commonly known... The Muslim Viking cheese makers in Spain being one of my favorites.

The Fire Piper

((*loud warhorn blowing*))

Quinlan Vuong

It's really too bad... Vikings are cool, but they've been done and re-done. Of course, they were always going to win, because they SELL. Alas... I really wish you would treat subjects a lot of people don't already know a lot about !
