Suggestion survey: May (Discovery)

Please suggest topics that you think fit the theme "Discovery." Rob Rath, the writer for this next series, wants to see what you can come up with based on this word as inspiration :)

Fill out this form to add in your suggestion!

(Suggestions must be submitted between now and 9:59pm PT on Sunday, May 20. Only one suggestion per person please! Multiple suggestions from the same person during any given survey period will be manually removed.)

EDIT: For anyone who is confused about how we do the suggestion survey system--we have a ratio of 2 suggestion surveys to every 1 voting poll. So if/when we ever do a theme for the survey, that theme will appear twice in a row. The results of both surveys are collected and added together when we determine patron suggestions to include in the next voting poll.

Comments

can I still do this or am I late?

Lady Bug

Both of these are 100% valid.

Robert Rath

Suggest the guide of the OREGON TRAIL. Kit Carson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLxsSGO2VWE

Primarch359

Somebody do discovery of steam power and engineering, it's a topic that is way too looked over, yet it fundamentally changed humanity permanently

Joe Korshoff

I suggested Victor-Franz Hess and the discovery of the Cosmic rays. This was a major discovery of the first half of the 20th century which contributed alot to our knowledge of the universe and its properties.

Aureelian

The Dutch East India Company. The first publicly traded corporation, it (and the British East India Company) became monstrous, like cyber-punk megacorporations, capable of minting their own coins, fielding their own militaries and annexing their own territory. The VOC and EIC exploited the discoveries of new maritime technology and new markets east of India, the world discovered through them, the dangers of unregulated corporations.

Erik Eldritch

I'd say the Vikings' discovery of America. It's not often something talked about when people talk about European discovery of the Americas.

LeoZiggy

The Shackleton expedition is probably a story worth putting in (I almost did), but I went with Isaac Newton because his life is so darned fascinating.

Julia Augusta

Discovery of the evolution of species.

Chris Gay

I went with the discovery of the various elements. Considering how many there are these days, I imagine some discoveries would get more attention than others if my idea got picked. Presumably, this would also include some of the missteps made in the process, such as the rise and fall of phlogiston theory.

General Luigi

I suggested Ernest Shakleton, but now think I should have done Roanoke Island. Anyone already put that one in?

Jim Land

periodic table

Hayden Tuff

Which is a better topic: How about the discovery and eventual exploitation of penicillin or Fritz Haber?

Rossum

is the discovery of oil or the cal gold rush valid

arthur D. gonzalez-martin

It wasn't a formal thing, people just discovered that the people west of them would buy the stuff they'd bought from the east of them and trade gradually grew. Few merchants ever really traded along the full length of the Silk Road, so it's more just a matter of there being a production surplus in China that could be sold to outsiders and sufficient capital further west for people to buy those Chinese goods.

Extra History

Discovery and establishment of the Silk Road. I know what the road is, I don't know how it began.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Is this a repeat? I made a suggestion last time...

Rossum

I suggested Captain James Cook: Discovery of Australia and first contact with the Gweagal tribe.

Stephan Nassir De Las Casas

I submitted the travels of Ibn Batuta. He made a brief appearance in the Mali series and I'd love to learn more about his travels.

Joël Quenneville

I couldn't fit in Margrethe I with the theme. This saddens me. I went with a comparison between the US and Soviet moon programs instead.

themunck

Wait didn't we do this theme last month? Are we doing another Discovery month?
