Thank you for pointing out Ibn Batuta's faults, as well. But now I'm thinking of something Solomon said: "Everyone sees their own way as right, ..." So we are all prone to miss our own faults. I think that's one reason we need each other. Solomon also said "As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another."

I'm familiar with it, so I was worried I was getting my wires crossed and just forgetting a mention last week, but I went back and checked and he didn't get any a single word. It's hard for me to say, but I'd worry that a newcomer wouldn't get why that journey prompted Ibn Battutah to visit just from this.

Probably because Ibn Battutah is a good character to explain the trans-Saharan trade, and that's important to understanding Mansa Musa. So they're building an idea instead of going chronologically. It's an interesting narrative choice.
