The Empire of Mali - An Empire of Trade and Faith - Extra History - #2

Ibn Battutah wrote a book called "The Travels," producing the only eyewitness account of the Mali Empire. So today we’re going to follow him, letting his journey teach us about how trade built the realm.

Thank you for pointing out Ibn Batuta's faults, as well. But now I'm thinking of something Solomon said: "Everyone sees their own way as right, ..." So we are all prone to miss our own faults. I think that's one reason we need each other. Solomon also said "As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another."

Bill Lemmond

One could say the steak joke in this video is well done.

Will Dan start narrating with his real voice? Will someone get confused over flags? Will James ascend to a higher plan of conciseness? Find out next time, On EHZ.

Isn't IB the current record holder for most interesting man?

I loved this video it was great!!!

Well, anything can happen in Alternate History Fiction.

Okay. I was just confused because they mention his journey in this episode without any real context of what it...was. I'm familiar with it, so I was worried I was getting my wires crossed and just forgetting a mention last week, but I went back and checked and he didn't get any a single word. It's hard for me to say, but I'd worry that a newcomer wouldn't get why that journey prompted Ibn Battutah to visit just from this.

Brett

They said they're doing that in the next episode. Probably because Ibn Battutah is a good character to explain the trans-Saharan trade, and that's important to understanding Mansa Musa. So they're building an idea instead of going chronologically. It's an interesting narrative choice.

Joshua Evans-Lowell

Is it just me, or did this episode just completely skip ahead of Mansa Musa's famous journey and just assume the audience knows what it was about? A viewer completely new to the period isn't going to have the context for that simply from the these first two episodes.

Brett

It sounds like Battutah expected to get rich just by showing up. That doesn't sound very holy.

Jason Youngberg

What if they did and it vanished like the English colony?

Jared Adams

Alternate History Idea: what if, instead of Vanishing without a Trace, Emperor Abubakri II and his Fleet Successfully Navigated the Atlantic Ocean and Eventually Landed at OTL Roanoake Island, where they Established a Colony?
