An eye for an eye, a missile for a missile--that's how the saying goes, right? So thought the Soviet Union and the United States in the early fall of 1962, kicking off a 13-day staring contest that scared the world.

When I visited DC a few years back, the national archives had an exhibit on the cuban missile crisis, with tapes from the white house/excomm meetings. Listening to them makes you realize just how close the world came to nuclear annihilation, and makes you thankful that JFK was in charge - Robert Kennedy was pushing hard for a first strike. I definitely recommend everyone should listen to them at some point.

The architect of strategic bombing, LeMay was spoofed in Dr. Strangelove as General Ripper. Kennedy did not trust the Joint Chiefs, due to the failed Bay of Pigs invasion where Kennedy believed he was manipulated by the JCS into an ill-advised invasion who used his lack of military experience (Kennedy's military experience was limited to commanding a PT boat, he did not feel comfortable second-guessing individuals who commanded entire commands or theaters of war) against him.

The tanks(yes, tanks for Cuba - can't have a nuclear missile base without tanks) and other equipment loaded on freighters under cover of night was officially going as farm equipment. He saw corn fields in US once, and wanted to grow corn in USSR as well - the idea flopped, but earned him 'Great Cornholio' moniker years later. The agricultural reform was so bad, Churchill said once he wouldn't die from old age but from laughing too hard after USSR, that used to export bread under Stalin started importing bread under Khrushchev. When USSR rocket managed to hit one target in space, detonating some 20m(60 feet) away from the mark, he bragged about being able to hit the squirrel in the eye. Oh, and don't let me get started on housing reform. I lived for twenty years in an apartment block that was built under him; I'd rather be homeless in US than get an apartment for free from Soviet government.
