WW1 Christmas Truce: Silent Night - Extra History - #1

What makes me love this Ladies and Gentlemen, is that the Monday before it was youtube and I had to prior knowledge of the subject, I wrote a heartfelt piece about the 1914 Truce, and I was grateful to see this pop up the following Sat and learn more about what I feel is one of the greatest showings of Humanity coming through in the most inhumane of times

Breck Starr

And I have finally joined World of Tanks. It's downloading and installing, now. I don't know how much I'll play, as generally I avoid PVP. But if I can raise charity funds through live-streaming, I'm willing to get squished, over and over. :)

Bill Lemmond

I'm hoping, some day, with my web comic, to show an episode of Dr. Luther's alternate reality viewer, in which the Christmas truce was adopted by the various army leaders, then their governments, and the war ended. To roughly quote Terry Pratchett, "There's no better present than a future."

Bill Lemmond

That is the cutest bed-time story I've ever heard of. :} Props to your dad, and I hope we did justice to this tale you grew up on!

Extra History

I've heard so many recommendations for this movie, I think I have to check it out!

Extra History

The photo of them playing football together always gets me.

Extra History

Can we declare every day of the year a holiday and have our soldiers trade cigars and booze every holiday forever?

Extra History

Huh, that's an interesting take! I could see it.

Extra History

Honestly I'm pleased we got to go back to WW1 as well. Rob Rath (the writer for this series) did a wonderful job dispelling common myths about the Truce while still showing how many amazing acts of courage and humanity brought it into being.

Extra History

I know! I really like this series, but it made our editor cry.

Extra History

Well, gear up for Sunday then because there's one more episode coming!

Extra History

This was one of my favorite bed-time stories that my dad told me growing up. My dad loves history (particularly WWI and WWII); so I got some rather unconventional bed-time stories as a child.

Tabitha Hooper

If you are intrested, there is a French movie about the christmas truce in WW1. It's called "Joyeux Noël". I dont know how the title was translated in english, but a litteral translation would be "Merry Christmas".

Iforgotmyname

Agreed, Christina.

I always get teary eyed when people talk about the Christmas truce. It's one of those rare, beautiful moments where, just for a second, everyone was human. No vanity, no anger, just peace in the middle of war.

Ryan Wojciechowski

Knowing that people used this to spy and prepare for war doesn't change how I feel. It's a miracle made by people. People who rose above the hate of war, if only for a little while. I hope one day we can do that again.

Jason Youngberg

I recently read that the truce was essentially the product of trench warfare - unmoving and for long times facing the same enemy, it's essentially a repeated prisoner's dilemma that allowed for the building of trust, which would be far harder in mobile wars where one would rapidly switch enemies.

Cifer

This story really does show both the human capacity for empathy and bonding and the intrinsic brutality of states at war. I do appreciate that the First World War seems to be less forgotten than it was just a decade or so ago. It was so important and, yet, for most of my life, most of what people had to say about it was that it must have existed since there was a second one.

Christina Maria Jessen

this video is so sweet, but also so tragic

Heath Dionne

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY!!! I've been Longing for Extra History to Return to the First World War and it Finally has! This is definately One of the best Early Christmas Presents I have received.
