I'm so sorry to hear that Caradoc... T^T You have such an interesting perspective on this topic. It's crazy that you had to grapple with such similar issues. We'd love to hear more about it if you're willing to share. We hope you're doing well.

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the Swampman thought experiment. It’s something I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about myself. I have some brain damage from an accident. I don’t remember the accident at all. I also lost more than half the memories of my life. I woke up the morning after the accident with a completely different personality from the one I had the day before so I’ve wrestled with trying to understand these questions ever since. Your perspective was interesting but I would have liked to hear more on it.

Speaking of definitions, as I was in previous comments below, your story about the tree having meaning requires a different definition of "meaning" than the one I'm familiar with. You talk about the tree providing oxygen and shade, etc. They are just functions of the natural laws of science, not "meanings". Meaning implies intention or a conscious relationship. Some people choose arbitrarily to believe in a supernatural being who creates, or created, everything. In that scenario everything would have meaning behind it, but only because a consciousness created it with a purpose in mind. Without that a rock is just a rock i.e. an inevitable consequence of the natural laws of the Universe. It can still be beautiful and useful but it has no inherent meaning in and of itself. Its relationship to something conscious can bestow meaning upon it. Also, the planet, the solar system, the galaxy all exist in a vacuum ;-)

The tree falling in the forest question is about definition of sound: if we define sound as waves hitting the eardrums and the brain interpreting those waves as something we call sound then, is it still a sound if it isn’t heard? But it’s also about our relationship with the Universe… and a lot of stuff you can only learn for yourself by contemplating the question. Side note: I think it was the American comedienne, Joan Rivers who asked the question, “If a man expresses an opinion in a forest and there’s no woman there to hear him, is he still wrong?” It’s actually not a bad philosophical question in itself but I enjoy it more as the joke she intended.

Answer of the day: it’s not ok for me to lie at all. For me there’s no such thing as a white lie. I don’t ever expect or require others to have the same principles as me and I don’t think mine are better than anyone else’s. Everyone should find their own way. If you think “white lies” are ok I’m not going to judge you. For me, there’s nothing worse than telling a lie. My Universe doesn’t have to coincide with yours at all points. There’d be no value in that; no point.
