I wrote in the same suggestion as last time -- the Haitian Revolution.

An inspiring story of one of Japan's renowned masters of Karate, Oyama Matsutatsu. Born in occupied Korea and moving to Japan, he faced a lot of hardships simply being a foreigner especially in the land of the conquerors. However with kindness displayed to him in little pockets of his life, Oyama dedicated his life to solitary training and eventually finding the Kyokushin Style of Karate.

I went with the collapse of the Spanish Empire shortly after the influx of gold they received from the New World. I find it fascinating that after acquiring so much gold the empire was able to fall so quickly and decisively, respectively.

Pros and Cons

The Taiping Rebellion. Possibly an even bigger factor in spelling the end of imperial China than the Opium Wars, though it was very much influenced by them, and the largest civil war in human history. In fact it was so big, that it's the only war that has estimates of a death toll higher than WWII, though those are outliers. It also has loopy religion, lots of interesting economic topics and the sheer absurdity of the Ever Victorious Army.

I went with Vlad the Impaler and Stephen the Great because... well, really, I think it's a really interesting topic that is underrepresented. They were both really interesting people and make for a good story.

StelarCF

Good one! Rasputin is quite the interesting figure.

Kinda on this note, this being my first time and all I'm curious, do the topics that don't get drawn stay in the hat for future drawings, or must a topic be resubmitted each time to stay in the running?

I can kinda see what you're saying regarding the Japanese "state system," though it had its differences to be sure from Westphalian sovereignty. Another thing of note is that the Peace of Westphalia kinda spelled the end, leastways in part, of the Habsburgs, which drastically changed the political game in Europe. So even without being "the all-important birth of the state system and most absolutely critical moment in IR history" like all our professors make it out to be, it would still definitely be a significant historical moment and a turning point which ended a political era. Fascinating subject really, I'll have to add it to my list of subjects to propose if it doesn't win.

Ahh Westphalia. The thing my IR lecturers drone on and on about lol. Although I think Japan had a sort of state system (although not as well established and still a little influence from the emperor) established during the sengoku period.

I went with the Meji Restoration because I am a weeb. :p Considered putting forward the sack of Rome in 1527 though. Maybe next time.

As it just creeps in before the 1920 deadline, I went for Rasputin and Tsar Nicholas the Second.

I found out about Sargon when I bought The Encyclopedia of Warfare and read about his military exploits. And then, interest piqued, I tried to find a book on him and only found an exceptionally dense academic text from the 80s about his birth myth (bought it anyway). I'm kinda astonished how little he's discussed when he was such a game-changing figure for the ancient world. There seems to be plenty out there about him, in later excavated writings he was a recurring character who remained popular thousands of years after he died, and yet I can't seem to find a biography about him or anything like that. Hence why I'd love to see EH take a crack at him and see what they dig up and compile in one place.

Great suggestions! It would be great to see more than the attacks at DC, Baltimore and New Orleans that are typically covered when discussing the war of 1812. As mentioned above, digging into the complex character that is Jackson would also be quite interesting. I know very little about Sargon/Akkadians. I recently read a novelization of the life of Hammurabi that really piqued my interest in ancient mesopotamia. I'd love to learn more!

Perfectly all right as long as you don't call out people by name (e.g. HEY SORAYA, YOU SHOULD SUGGEST THIS TOPIC WITH ME)!

Extra History

I can't say I know the greatest number of duplicates off-hand, though I'd guess it's probably 6 entries or so. I will say that where there are duplicates submitted by different people, we enter everyone's suggestion into the hat, so duplicates do increase the odds of their topic winning.

The Peace of Westphalia would be awesome! As a Global Affairs major that would make me positively giddy. lol The War of 1812 would be cool too. Love me some of that complicated historical figure that is Andrew Jackson. I suggested Sargon the Great and the Akkadian Empire/Sargonic Dynasty. I find Sargon to be a fascinating historical figure, having organized the first true army and founded the first empire. Kinda big human milestones, you'd think he'd be discussed more often. But of course going that far back in history sources are at a premium so I figured I'd expand the topic to the dynasty and empire he founded. Sorta like how they covered the Zulu with the early focus on Shaka, but the Akkadians with an early focus on Sargon.

Christopher Smith

War of 1812. Topics just about US history seem doomed to die - but I figured something that covered more of N. America might stand a chance.

I'm super curious what everyone is submitting! Please reply with yours if you feel comfortable sharing it. My submission was "The peace of Westphalia and the rise of the modern nation-state". I'm looking forward to hearing everyone else's!

Joël Quenneville

It's so tempting to try influencing other suggestioners :( Is that ok?

StelarCF

Me three!

Nessf

How many duplicates of the same topic? I know there have been times where several of us submitted the Taiping Rebellion and there's apparently a dedicated Great Nordic War faction every time.

Christina Maria Jessen

Welcome, and good luck!

Extra History

I believe last time we had 80 topics submitted.

Me too!!!

I kinda wanna know the odds for the topic I submitted to be drawn, like just so I know if it's lottery chance or chance chance.

Vika

Absolutely thrilled to be able to make my first suggestion as a sponsor for a topic!!!
