Music: Early Christian Schisms - The Oxyrhynchus Hymn

I can't describe this any more perfectly than the musicians themselves:

We started out with a single voice singing the original melody from the Oxyrhynchus Hymn--the oldest Christian song with both lyrics and musical notation.  Other voices join him singing in unison, but slowly start to wander into their own melodies.  As the song progresses the melodies become wildly different and the middle eastern instruments are eventually replaced by more modern instruments.  At the end, the original hymn endures, but is colored by the multitude of other melodies surrounding it.  These wandering melodies are appropriated by a giant church organ to be brought into line for a single, unified harmony.

Wow. Bravo, Sean and Dean Kiner!

Music: Early Christian Schisms - The Oxyrhynchus Hymn

Comments

I can't get over how beautiful this is, this is a real masterpiece.

We're still working on recording all of it, never mind distilling it into an accessible web video format.

Timothy McLean

Might be a squeeze to put it into six episodes. Maybe a two parter? :P

RMS Oceanic

Yeah, I figure that's an achievable goal, right?

You guys are going to do all of human history right?

Beautiful

That's exactly why we changed it, thanks to a couple of patrons who either wrote in or allowed us to question them about the subject! These different branches of faith were initially dubbed heresies by the orthodox church, so the title was intended to represent that history rather than a value judgment. But we agreed with the patrons who suggested that the title would charge people's perceptions even before they watched the video, and while we're aware this is going to be a charged subject regardless, we didn't want to pre-color that discussion with a title that has very loaded meaning. And the word "schisms" gets the point across just as well, so we switched!

When I read their description I was just floored. And then more so when I heard the music. It is perfect for this series.

Extra History

A fantastic piece of music! Really helps get the theme of the series across. Speaking of the series, it's interesting how this series was originally named "Early Christian Heresies" but is now "Early Christian Schisms". I like that change, as "Heresy" is more likely to give weight to one faction being correct/good and the other being wrong/bad, while "Schism" feels more neutral. It should help frame the story without unnecessary baggage and fewer biases in what is already a charged subject.

RMS Oceanic

Amazing music! Especially love the allegory behind it all. Getting me even more excited for this series than I already am.
