Europe: First Crusade - II: Peter the Hermit - Extra History

Things can't go any worse for the People's Crusade than they did with Walter sans Avoir and Emicho, right? ...Right?

Europe: First Crusade - II: Peter the Hermit - Extra History

Comments

Great one, thank you <3 The drawing of the Peter is just absolutely amazing :D

Martin Ockovsky

Why, peasants? Why did you do all these horrible things? I understand feeling trapped by your lot and wanting to go an a adventure (read: crusade) to take a break from your daily toil, but .... >_<

CarolineHan

On the up side the random gang of raiders will have given the Muslims an unreallisticly low expectation for the competency of the real crusaders.

paul staber

it can be both

paul staber

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad

Christian Jensen

The sizes of medieval armies are notoriously difficult to accurately determine. Accurate records for the supplying and recruitment of armies very rarely survive if they were even made in the first place. For the Crusades there are very good records for many of the noble Crusaders since they usually entered into formal contracts with the church that guaranteed protection for their lands while they were away. Noble warriors only make up a fraction of the Crusader army, especially for the First Crusade, so it's hard to reliably determine how large the army would have been based on these records alone. Usually historians are left with the numbers reported in chronicle accounts of the events. These are notoriously unreliable (although some chroniclers are better than others) but when combined with what accurate records we do have they can usually be worked down to a rough ballpark figure. In general, though, this figure is in the thousands and narrowing it down further is usually impossible.

I can't help but laugh. the ironic humor is just too massive.

<3!

Extra History

Oh, we are just getting started here...

Extra History

This one's got 6 episodes!

Extra History

Good company. :)

Extra History

It's a good question! There's a ton of debate among historians about the likely motives of the Crusaders.

Extra History

Dehumanization of other people and allowing yourself to think of them as "the enemy" rather than *people* has been the unfortunate source of some terrible things. :\

Extra History

I don't know if James has access to them, but I'm afraid I do not! I wouldn't be surprised if that information exists at the end of a research tunnel, though.

Extra History

Well that was a total disaster. the lack of training amongst the civilian population seemed to be the cause. Kind of reminds me of mass hysteria. Only with out the panic.

noah

Of course it was ignored. You can't have Christians coming off as the bad guys. That's oppression! That happened in my high school history class. The teacher tried to talk about the slaughter of Jews and several Catholic students objected to how their faith was being "slandered" and how it was all the fault of the Muslims. Since this happened in the 80s with the rise of the Moral Majority, the teacher had to skip that part. The first two videos in this series filled in some of the gaps left behind.

Jason Youngberg

Do we have a number better than "thousands" or "tens of thousands"?

Jason Youngberg

Well that must have been an awkward evening for the pope...

Harrison Brussel

I know. It's TERRIFYING that this is the one that went "well".

Nessf

well that was something my history class ignored. At least the crusade is going to be starting now! No more peasants looting towns because they can... I hope

Teollinc

What a bunch of assholes.

Joseph Frank Perez

...The first Crusade is usually considered to have gone the best out of the bunch, as I recall...

Stephen

I know they have different morals back in the medieval ages, but this whole episode seems to be "the height of stupidity". Like what the hell were they thinking?

Hung Nguyen

Well, that definitly make us human look like moron......

Irall

Ya gotta wonder how much motivation faith was motivation for these early Crusaders, and how much it was simply trying to get by day to day/looking to make a better life for themselves.

Michael Jebbett

How many episodes are going to be in this series?

Samson

I guess i'll put this on my playlist right after the Terry Jones version

Michael Waisfeld

So many facepalm-worthy moments.

skyenet

That couldn't have been a much worse mess if they had been TRYING to mess everything up.

Nessf

wow the first crusade was such a total mess, do you even strategy? face palm.

Murabito

No matter how many times I watch it I can't help but want to laugh and cry at this absurd beginning to the first crusade.

Farzad Mansouri

Battle of Cannae: "And thus the First Crusade began." Teutoburg Forest: "And thus the First Crusade began." South Sea Bubble: "And thus the First Crusade began." Nearly any Western Front WW1 offensive: "And thus the First Crusade began." That time on the Apprentice where they tried to buy a Kosher chicken from a Muslim Butcher: "And thus the First Crusade began."

RMS Oceanic

Wake up. See update. Instant happiness.
