I want to study black and white rendering, because I really like it, but I haven't developed my artistic eye to really see it. So one part of this process is pushing blacks and greys and whites around to practice how they work, which these two quick sketches are. The composition of the first one actually came to me in the shower, but the image was centered around the triangular shadow behind her rather than the fun sexy sex.
I think my main barrier to doing the kind of b&w art that I want to, is that I subconsciously drift towards literalism/realism, but the kind of b&w comic art I'm aiming for is a more symbolic/abstract approach.
The second part of this study process is to force myself to pay more attention when I'm reading b&w comics. I habitually read really really fast and have to consciously slow down to appreciate comic art! So I'm going to focus on collecting reference images of b&w comic work I really like.
Do you have any black and white art you really like? A manga page that really strikes you? Please feel free to link in the comments or dm me anywhere. I'm particularly interested in less hatchy/textured styles, with good use of solid black and less emphasis on gradients of greys. But also, I'm keen to see whatever kind of b&w work strikes you!
