It is ironic that Raizen would have actually been easily the strongest demon had he not starved himself, and that it was his love for an ordinary human woman that ultimately led to his demise. I actually feel bad for him because he was clearly heart broken and I think starving himself was just a way of him trying to commit suicide so he could be with his lover in the next life.
