That's definitely a theme in this arc. The themes in this arc are very interesting to think about and connect to real life issues and subjects.

Yes, I remember that moment when he released the spirit cuffs. At the time we didn't realise it, but that was Puu. It's an awesome way to show the growth of both Puu and Yusuke

Also, an atavism is a real and rare genetic phenomenon that can occur, so if you see someone that looks like a caveman it probably is the result of an atavism. lol

Puu is a physical representation of Yusuke's soul, so when Puu transformed into a phoenix it showed not only Yusuke's rebirth since the phoenix in mythology was a mythical beast that resurrects from the ashes, but being this large powerful creature also shows a tremendous growth in Yusuke's powers as well. Also, that was foreshadowed too when Yusuke released his spirit cuffs and a large ethereal phoenix of energy emerged from Yusuke's soul, so Puu was always meant to eventually grow and involve into that, but as the captain said Yusuke's body wasn't ready for the transformation until after all this training and fights as a spirit detective.

I feel prejudice is another theme in regard to Yusuke being half demon because even in real life we have preconceived stereotypes of how we generalize people based on their race and when someone is mixed for example being half White and half Black it's difficult to categorize them because they don't neatly fit into one group or the other. Inuyasha is a series that really delves more into that theme.

In characters that are half human, and half demon are something you guys like, watch Inuyasha. The movies are really good too.

You mentioned pretty much everything I was thinking of. Also, there was the demon scientist Dr. Ichigaki, that was interested in Yusuke's body because there was something different about him compared to other humans that he wanted to do experiments on and figure out. Also, this is where the idea of good and evil being gray in this show becomes apparent because of all the demons Yusuke has become friends with throughout the series like Kurama, Hiei, Chu, and Jin who are clearly aren't evil or at least not have the propensity to change.

Our boy Yusuke is back and better than ever with a massive reveal. Some small things that were hinted regarding Yusuke's demon lineage (Anime specifically). Episode 21 vs Suzaku at one point during the fight he says specifically "I've been treating you as a normal human when you're not. I don't know what you are". In episode 33 with Rugby he tries to kill Yusuke and explains that "This human has somehow stolen our demon powers". In that same episode Keiko mentions how she saw Yusuke in a way she never saw him before and how it's dangerous but it's like he's home due to how happy he is. There's a ton more that I could go over as well but you get the general idea. While some of it wasn't planned for sure in the original manga as Togashi was writing it the bread crumbs are left there and if you ever decide to rewatch it's amazing to really see how the signs were there about Yusuke having demonic energy. Can't wait for you to see what happens next as things finish up for this arc.
