Just like Kurama said, this was the first time Hiei felt pain and loss for someone and was fighting for someone other than himself. Character development!

These sort of revelations and twists that other shonen don't really do especially at the time it was written. It always keeps you on your toes and makes you really wonder what's going to happen next. In hindsight the clues were always there but most of the time you don't figure it out until the reveal. It makes rewatching it great and why I always come back to it.
