Gohan is more well read, but Piccolo has way more experience and wisdom, which serves him better in combat. I mean, Gohan ain't Kazuo Kiriyama from the Battle Royale manga. He ain't gonna take down his instructor because he read a book, only through overpowering him. No one is immune to mind games. Eventually, Buu's Dun MΓΆch will affect Gohan.
