The Character “Captain Disgust”
Captain Disgust is a world war survivor and ex-police chief of a previously prosperous urban city that had been ruthlessly demolished not too long ago.
His character is one of grumpiness and intolerance towards the selfish feats of human ambition and the collateral damage humans blindly commit on the pursuit for themselves.
He has seen the dark side of humanity whether in his days of fighting lower class crime or the day of being a causality to higher class’s war.
It goes saying that he despises those who do not care for the value of a life, and those who find pleasure in walking over people.
During the “Lab of God” game section, Captain Disgust serves as Mayor Marissa’s Consigliere, leveraging his vast experience of running an urban military force being a great asset toward the function of an interim government.
Captain Disgust’s Arrogance
As Mayor’s Marissa’s right hand man, he serves as an inquisitor of sorts, policing the region’s affairs in order to deter injustices.
That includes the potential of persecuting “The Lab” for unethical ambitions.
Although something he learned from hard experience, Captain Disgust is a very principled man despite his stubborn personality, as he doesn’t go after people due to personal beliefs, but rather when objective crimes are committed.
That said, though what “The Lab” does to interact with the outside world isn’t a crime, but it could be considered controversial and Captain Disgust is inclined to puts up roadblocks to deter "The Lab"'s development, as sees too much change as bad thing, because it carries too many unforeseen consequences.
Especially when the transformations to the world around "The Lab" become increasing apparent, causing Captain Disgust to become increasingly disturbed, as he feels strongly that humans shouldn’t hop on a bandwagon to change themselves for the better and should appreciate the imperfections that they are born with.
Appeasing Captain Disgust
Within Captain Disgust’s projected arrogant persona lies a broken individual of PTSD and learned pessimism, such sheltered things that have been engraved in him over a lifetime of experience.
In order to appease Captain Disgust, the use of benevolence is a must, as Disgust will only yield when his moral high ground has collapsed in face of “The Lab”'s developed reputation of being one of world-changing charity and the propagations of treatments to the worse of ills.
Though difficult due to his excessive stubbornness, it is even possible to transform / heal Captain Disgust to a more ideal version of himself and to persuade him to open up to the change set forth by “The Lab”'s will and not to stand in the way of progress.
Captain Disgust’s survival instinct also takes precedence over his willingness to pursue a perpetual conflict, so if regime change occurs to his core set of power, he will walk away in defeat.
Captain Disgust’s Suspicion Side-Consequences
One of “The Lab”’s biggest secrets that they keep from the public is the initial and ultimate motivation of discovering a mechanism to become a god.
Something that if would leak out would cause immediate and loud controversy, putting “The Lab”’s pursuit in peril.
But until the day of revelation or until outside events manifest a need for a god, “The Lab” is viewed from the outside perspective of being a revolutionary startup company whose transformative products aim to better people’s ideal body image like a sort of super medicine.
However, that sort of propagation doesn’t work on everyone as principled characters, like Captain Disgust, can view it as problematic and can speculate on what would be the natural conclusion to such a prolonged research avenue.
If for instance, Captain Disgust finds out that the non-spoken end goal of “The Lab” is to ascend into godhood, he would work furiously to shut ”The Lab” down.
But while the suspicion is in its infancy, through casual investigation, the suspicion, represented as a spectrum, grows to an end point where the truth is undeniable.
This pursuit of truth can be quick or can be slow, depending how “The Lab” mitigates its appearance.
Like if Captain Disgust, asks “The Lab” what are their long term goals, and the Player Character answers “To be gods”, then Captain Disgust’s suspicion grows at a greater rate than if the Player answered “To cure cancer”.
Another avenue is gossip, like if “The Lab” told Susanna about seeking godhood, and in the background Susanna tells Captain Disgust; Disgust would confront “The Lab” and based on the interrogation would add increase to the suspicion spectrum.
Mechanically, the more suspicious Captain Disgust is percentage wise, the more active he becomes in actively sabotaging the lab from the outside.
Even in the uphill scenario of convincing Captain Disgust to stand aside the propagation of “The Lab”’s products, he will still work tirelessly to thwart “The Lab”’s ascension efforts, as it beyond obscene to him.
Possible outcomes of this side-consequence include: Captain Disgust never solidifying on the ascension suspicion, Captain Disgust being dismissed and cancelling his investigation, Captain Disgust discovering the truth and opposing "The Lab", or Captain Disgust discovering the truth, but lacks the circumstances to oppose "The Lab".
