Avatar: the Last Airbender Ongoing Set Notes

Avatar: the Last Airbender preview season has begun, and as a patron you get access to my ongoing set notes, which I'll do my best to update every day as cards get revealed. It's kind of like a rough draft of my set review.

It's a little too early to know for sure whether cards or overrated or underrated, it can be dangerous to base that strong of an assessment off of a single sealed. That said, it is a card that I had at one point as a B-, because I did like the general combination of an attack trigger that lets you choose the target for once, and the high toughness stats, but then I started thinking about how often he'd attack and the trigger is fairly irrelevant. It is a hard card to evaluate to be sure, and it may well be better than a "C," I'd have a hard time seeing it as an A- though, since it takes a turn to get going and there are certainly situations where it's a very easy choice for your opponent to make. If you're behind, for example, you can't really just be swinging with Combustion Man.

So I just came back from a prerelease and I can tell you that Combustion Man is highly underrated. At turn 5 he comes down with a developed board state for my opponent often with 2-3 creatures and likely one with evasion of some sort. On turn six if they have not dealt with this 4/6 creature, he would attack. I would select their best permanent (even lands) and they would of course take the damage to save the permanent, dealing 4 to them. Then Combustion man with his 6 toughness is challenging to trade with and would then deal another 4 damage. Often enough I could increase his power on turn six by adding counters or riotting for extra damage. The floor on this card is incredibly high, if your opponent has nothing on the table you will often win the game. If your opponent has a reasonable board state you can take out their best thing or do 4 damage plus combat damage. I would give this an B+ or A-. So many of my opponents, said "I cannot believe that is an uncommon."
