Let's Create a Character 11b: What does she do for a living?
Added 2024-01-26 08:54:11 +0000 UTCHer job will help us determine her personality in a way, although her personality will kind of build organically with her appearances. We know that she is friendly and a good person, or Miyuki wouldn't want to be friends with her (Miyuki may be a bad judge of when not to take her clothes off, but she's pretty good at telling who's a good person).
I changed some of the suggestions a bit, here are my thoughts/considerations for you:
Art Historian - I upgraded her from a Museum tour guide, because that's normally an unpaid volunteer position. Museums usually require at least an MA, so she'd be an assistant/grad student, much like Clarissa. She'd have to be pretty smart, but maybe suffers a bit from tunnel vision sometimes.
I changed the Diver suggestion slightly because being a reef diver specifically makes more sense in Hawaii than California, but there's still plenty of diving to be done. Around here it's wetsuits all the time though. This is the kind of job where mistakes can be fatal, so she'd be more focused and a bit more serious.
(She's going to surf as a hobby, so wetsuits/bikinis are always possible either way.)
IT Support technician - Kiana comes to your office to unplug the Ethernet cable and then plug it back in again. The Internet is restored! This is a job that pays well enough she can go out, travel, etc., and gives her technical skills that the other girls don't have but might be useful.
Bartender - rather than waitress, because bartenders make enough to live around here, their rates are higher and they pull in tips faster. Servers are either doing the job temporarily or have to work a second job, sadly (minimum wage is $18.07 for the City, but average rent on a studio is like $3K a month - it goes quick). I know real world economics rarely enter into things, but restaurant FOH is not a job you really expect to support a comfortable lifestyle. As a bartender she'd be a bit more street smart and able to stand up for herself, necessary when working with drunk people. One issue here - why isn't she working on New Year's Eve? (Or if she is, did Miyuki just somehow convince the bartender to abandon the bar and come out and party?)
Classical Musician - rather than ballerina, because she really doesn't have the body type pro ballet insists on - tall, thin, no boobs, 30% neck. But maybe she plays the cello for the Symphony? Musicians get invited to perform interesting places sometimes. A job that calls for discipline, but also has a creative/spiritual side.
Twitch Streamer - I mean who wouldn't want to play video games on the internet for money? Also, something like "Is this Streamer Kiana dancing naked on the roof of a cop car on NYE?!" (red arrow drawn toward blurry image) leaking out onto the internet would suddenly make her extremely popular. Definitely bubbly and outgoing, being cute will only get you so far on it's own. A question - will this be horribly dated in a few years? Like how back in the 90s it was the height of cool to have a character be a bike messenger, a job that had basically ceased to exist by the middle of the 00s.
Travel Blogger/Writer - a great excuse to go lots of different places (why are so many of these nice hotels and resorts haunted?) Travel does expose you to a lot of very different places and cultures, so she'd have a very broad outlook.
(I'm passing over Cryptid Blogger as a profession since I actually have a separate plan that touches on that, that I should be able to reveal as we finish the character process here. It could definitely be an interest though, I expect a lot of people thought they saw a mummy or large feathered serpent boarding a train downtown and would want to look into it).
Fitness Influencer - like being a Twitch streamer, but much more useful, she's going to teach us all about fitness with the help of her new friend Miyuki, who is coincidentally a personal trainer. "Is this fitness Influencer Kiana dancing naked on the roof of a cop car on NYE?!" (red arrow drawn toward blurry image) will also get a lot of people watching, undoubtedly. Calls for the same bubbly, outgoing personality as a Streamer.
Club DJ - I threw this one in, DJs can do pretty well up to the point of getting international bookings, and I think she might look cute in cat ear headphones. TBF though you can wear cat ear headphones no matter what you're doing. Definitely a profession that's no stranger to partying too hard. Once again, why wasn't she working on NYE? did Miyuki kidnap the DJ right off the stage to hang out with her?
Heiress - I debated on whether or not to include this because it kind of puts us back where we started; most independently wealthy people still have to do something with their time, even if it's just pretending to run a nonprofit that they also finance. But it opens up the option that her family made a fortune in Pineapples, and she is now riding pineapples to the stars. (As a means of getting into fancy events, please note that Clarissa always gets invited, as happened in the Oracle Sword. It's not always clear why, but it's what happens.)

I'd also vote for a heiress/bartender/fitness diva trifecta. ;)

2024-01-26 23:09:20 +0000 UTCYou know, a lot of these aren’t mutually exclusive. She could be an heiress who works as a bar tender for fun and does fitness influencing as a side hustle to grow her brand. I of course endorse all three of professions if only so Ronnie can have another heiress or so Sierra can have another bar tender (a professional I’ve never actually mentioned she had in my comics!) to pal around with, and because her name is Kiana! She needs to wear a bikini and do fitness!
