NEW VIDEO!! The Downfall of the Xbox One | Past Mortem [SSFF]
Added 2021-11-01 06:34:25 +0000 UTC
Hi guys!
Sorry for posting so late, but we've really been working down until the last minute to wrap this one up. This is the follow-up to the Kinect video that we put out at the end of 2019. It was originally just going to be about the Kinect, but of course the disastrous launch of the Xbox One was about so much more than the Kinect. This is also the longest video we've ever made!! π±π± A full 12 minutes longer than the N-Gage Past Mortem! It wouldn't have been possible without the help of Soberdwarf on the edit. She really knocked it out of the park.
This video probably won't go up on youtube for another week or so, so enjoy some exclusivity!! Also, as always, be sure to let us know if you notice any mistakes.
ALSO! Podcast is tomorrow at 4pm PT!!

Finally had time to watch this one, and it was great! I enjoyed every minute, even the sickening sense of 'oh, God, did he really just say that?' deja vu. Good job to both of you, and kudos to Soberdwarf for the edit job!

I'd agree this is a failing in this video! I still want to cover those aspects of the console, but the PR was at times an even bigger of the mess than the console itself imo. But a bit ironic that in our "focus on the games!" xbone video, we actually don't focus that much on the games

Eh, not totally pleased at this one, to be honest. It's easy to rag on Xbox One's (at the time) bad PR. It would've been better to go into the hardware limitations, arrangements with publishers that went awry, etc. The fact of the matter is that MS was actually ahead of the market by a few years. Thatt this generation includes multiple digital-only consoles proves it.

Great video, Iβm glad you guys added how Sony used Xbox wounds as an advantage on E3.

I know the Sony used game video was the killing blow, but the other one that someone did a cut that is 1 minute 40 seconds of every mention of TV/television, sports and Call of Duty and only a couple of things (like the Halo show or introducing the XBOne).
I was never someone who liked the XBox, but even I could tell when something was good or not. And that introduction conference was baaaaaaad.

Oh man the whole used games debate is such a fascinating aspect of games. Its one of those aspects of gaming that was totally natural and a core part of the industry but also one of those things that was genuinely putting the whole industry at risk at one point. I totally get where Microsoft were coming from with the xbox one but it was also the dumbest thing to do with a mainline console. By 2013 the effect used games were having on AAA games in particular was very negative. They needed to make all their sales within the first 2 weeks of release because after that timeframe used copies would overtake new releases on most shelves and kill any further actual sales, I remember there was that news story on the tomb raider reboot selling millions but it still wasnt enough to turn a profit. Now firstly pinch of salt with all that, this is AAA publishers whining about not turning a profit, so how bad it was is very much open to debate. But it is true that video games were unique in how 2nd hand titles were handled. It was by far the most laxed industry when it came to stores selling second hand titles (its important to remember that books, dvds etc wouldnt give stores that sold second hand titles the same discounted prices as stores that didnt, effectively keeping a lot of 2nd hand stuff to smaller stores). But games offered no restriction which is why the largest retailer of games in the USA effectively ran on 2nd hand sales.
And that's bad sort of, it's a risk to the wider industry, making it a glass cannon, a few flops here and there could have seen some of the bigger publishers collapse which it did with THQ (again how good or bad this actually is can be a whole other debate)
But (and its a big but) as much as the game industry whined in 2009 - 2015 about the cure of 2nd hand games and tried to kill that aspect of the industry what they seemed to have forgotten is that 2nd hand games got the game industry to the scale it was at in 2010.
The peak in 2008 would not have been possible without the 2nd hand market primarily because the 2nd hand market massively lowered the cost of opening and running a basic game store. There is a reason why gamestops were at one point as common as starbucks. Why the area I lived in did not have a book store or video store but it did have a game store. Second hand games taking off in the ps1 era is a huge factor to why games blew up so much over the following decade.
It just by 2009/2010 started to turn sour as game publishers were pouring too much money in and expecting too much money back and the 2nd hand market was such a core part of game retailers that if they tried to control it the same way other industries did they might have seen themselves cut out instead.
Now the industry has shifted enough (how intentionally to screw them I'm not sure) to make it much easier to cut out the 2nd hand market, the rise of live services and online storefronts on every console have heavily reduced the effect of the 2nd hand market.

So good! Exactly why I support SSFF.

The "didn't do them any good" vindication of Microsoft's ideas ending was great. If the console generation had started a few years later, there might have been more takers.

No joke, I watched the Kinect video for the first time yesterday AND randomly decided to pull the trigger and sub to the patreon last night. What a confluence of events!

God this release cycle feels so recent too, and itβs been eight years at this point. Mandatory Kinect was something I heard a lot about. I got my One S in 2019 with no Kinect and Iβve had no reason to go out and get one.

I remember the lend games ad from Sony being shown first then Jack breaking it down. I miss Jack with his bullet points and sale charts.
