NEW VIDEO! Sonic’s Weird Portable Games (Ngage, iPod, and NGPC) | Punching Weight [SSFF]

Hi guys, Grace here!

This video marks the first of our Ngage bonanza! We’re hoping (*finally*) to make the Ngage Past Mortem our next video! 😚

BUT, before we get to all that, I’m SO happy we finally got to make this video! I feel like we have been sitting on this port of iPod Sonic for ages. Y’know, it actually put me down a weird rabbit hole: there was actually only about 54 games on the iPod. This was all pre App Store, and it looks like Apple only worked with a few studios (mostly EA, Namco, and Gameloft). Which is crazy to me because there was a huge opportunity just.... sitting there! I’ve heard rumors that Steve Jobs didn’t think highly of games, I wonder if that had anything to do with it or if it really took them that long to iron out the “closed garden” ethos of the App Store.

ANYWAYS, sorry for posting this so late at night (and so soon before the video goes live on YouTube). My parents are coming to town for a couple of days, and I wanted to get this video up before their visit.

PODCAST RECORDING IS ON MONDAY, DONT MISS IT!!

Talk to y’all soon,

Grace

That iPod version looks legit. Man, the iPod Classic was always a neat device. On its surface it's basically a portable hard drive that you can plug your headphones into, but it can pull off some tricks.

this ones so good, I'm asking my brother if they still have the videos of them playing the flip phone versions of sonic 1 and 2 cus those are incredible

dai!!

I foolishly sold my NGPC with Sonic and both of the excellent Metal Slug games. I live with the regret every day. Outstanding work as usual guys, never even seen the iPod version of Sonic running before. Thanks for your dedication to the increasingly obscure!
