[SSFF] Punching Weight Ep 1 - I Can't Believe It's GameBoy Color
Added 2016-01-27 13:03:57 +0000 UTC
And here it is in its final form! The first episode of Punching Weight, complete with brand new bumper by the always excellent Clockwork Pixel.
As always thank you so much for your continued support and look for the first episode of our other new show, "Past Mortem" where we will break down and examine the bitter break up of Hideo Kojima and Konami, coming very soon!
Derek, have you ever played Fortress by Majesco for the GBA? It's like they took the aspect that you're sorta playing with Tetris pieces to rebuild your castle in Rampart and took it further by turning Rampart into a full on Tetris versus style game.

I appreciate your concern but this is what I want to do! And I'm not rushing anything, I'm just working harder! One regret about the HVGN was I was never able to commit to consistency. It stifled my ability to grow my audience but it also stifled my ability to hone my craft. I was never happy with making a just few videos a year. Having months between reviews meant I wasn't getting enough practice! SSFF was a fresh start and a chance to improve my work, and one of those improvements was increasing our output. I spent 2015 training for it and 2016 is gonna be my year!

I really enjoy this but derek don't feel the need to rush your videos because that is what made the old hvgn so great,go at your own speed and if your fans don't like it then there not truely your fans, but I really did like this video looking forward to the next one.

I'm thinking about two little Game Boy gems that could be a nice adition to the list. I don't know if they are too unique, though.
One of them is called Legend of the River King, for the original GB. It's an RPG about fishing and it's not boring! The other is Boktai for the GBA, with it's solar sensor affecting gameplay.

On a scale of 1-10? It rates an 8.

thanks! it's something i've wanted to do for years actually, but i just couldn't get the concept right. plus these aren't as time consuming as full reviews so they'll be a change of pace!

"technical wizardy", don't think i'm not on to you. i forgot about half-life 2 on xbox! i'll have to keep an eye out for that one! but on the subject of moon, they recently remastered that game for 3ds. it was made by renegade kid who also made the 2 dementium games for ds, which i think are also getting a remaster. i'm familiar with the second one and it's a great horror game. daikatana and quest 64 are good ones! those are also going on the list, thanks!

well as stated in the video, i've been down with warlocked from day one! and mgs made a minor splash when it came out, so i've had a copy for years. dragon's lair i had completely forgotten about until a few months back. i'd been sitting on this idea for a while and since episodes are always going to be groups of three, rediscovering dragon's lair sealed the deal. and i've got maybe 5 more episodes planned out too!
there's a lot of stuff i've never played! i've not gotten far in either the to oracle game's, but they're probably not right for punching weight, maybe a full-on review. and i've never been a big pokemon guy, i beat blue way back in the day and never felt the need to go back

I think this new show has a lot of potential. I enjoyed watching it. Its to bad we don't live in the same state, or cant do Gameboy online. I actually own Warlocked. It's indeed a pretty fun game.

Very cool! Really amazed with the Dragons Lair game.. 'pixel trace' definitely looks to be accurate for what it is

Aww hell yeah, man I remember Warlocked and MGS Ghost Babel! Hell I own Ghost Babel, and at least played Warlocked. Its always amazing when you have these ambitious games that often require some kind of technical wizardry on part of the developers to fit onto consoles that seem to small for them, like the Xbox Port of Half Life 2, Infinite Space or Moon (yes, its just called Moon) for the Nintendo DS, Pretty much any GBA FPS, as well as games like Kill Switch and Wing Commander IV on the GBA. Also, for a future episode idea, why not do an episode on ports of games for "inferior" consoles that are arguably much better than their ports for better consoles? Like for example the GBC Versions of Daikatana and Quest 64 are MUCH better games than their N64/PC counterparts.

great video !!

Wow Derek how do you find these gems? I never gave two thoughts about GBC. Zelda Oracle and Pokémon are the only games I know for this short lived handheld. Did you play everything there is?

It's great to encounter Ghost Babel again! I remember playing it during the emulation times of the early 2000s and being very impressed. I remember also trying that Dragon's Lair port but I never heard of Warlocked! Got to look for it!
Great new show, very entrrtaining idea!! :D
