New theory announcement

The SpongeBob compilation is still my priority, but I figured I might as well announce a non-SB one I've been working on...

The "dream theory" is the most common, and probably the most lazy type of fan theory. You can practically take any slightly surreal show or movie and say "it's actually all a dream / the main character is in a coma / they're hallucinating from drugs / they're actually crazy in a mental asylum / they're actually dead and in purgatory! / etc" you get the point...

And probably the most popular show for this type of theory is... Blue's Clues. Go ahead and google "blues clues hallucination" and you'll see what I mean.

And I understand the appeal for this idea, you take one look at Blue's Clues and everything feels fake. Steve talks to a dog and inanimate objects all day, the whole world looks completely imaginary, and Steve even has to fake-walk in place to move around.

I even made a parody of these types of theories back in 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piLB97hv4yA (this was before I was making actual fan theories for a job lol)

I've always been a fan of this idea and wanted to properly dive into it, but unfortunately beyond just the general vibe of fakeness, there's never actually been any concrete evidence for this theory... until now.

After years of searching, I have finally found the holy grail of blue's clues "dream theory" evidence... Stay tuned...

Yeah I agree that theorizing about any character having a specific real world mental illness always feels icky. I try to avoid it unless the media itself directly tells us somethings going on. That’s why I never tried to “diagnose” Mrs. Puff, I just went with what the show told us about her

Dream/psychosis/purgatory theories, AKA “all in their head” theories feel like a cop out 90% of the time, since they both allow you to question pretty much everything about the show without even trying hard, and by extension, lean into the fact nothing is real. The willing suspension of disbelief is all but peeled away in most cases. “Nothing is real”, which is true, and basically just one step away from “It’s a work of media, created by at least one person to tell a story through representation.” And in most cases, any evidence that a character has a psychotic or other psychiatric condition is controversial, so theorizing about that is touchy at best. But Blues Clues? I think there is something deeper going on with that show!!!! I also personally have an in-depth “head” theory about Fairly OddParents: The whole show is about a boy who uses imagination as a coping mechanism, psychiatry is central to the plot (Timmy was on drugs that quelled his imagination, until he was switched to a combo that gave it back, but knows he can’t tell anyone about the fairies lest his parents take him to the shrink to get back on the heavier stuff, just like they did with Imaginary Gary), and the inconsistency of the Rules can be explained by the show’s whimsical depiction of Timmy’s imagination onto the world around him as a means of testing the consequences of a kid’s dreams. That’s why everyone was tired when he wished for a world where sleep wasn’t necessary. It was a coping mechanism to deal with the fact that it’s better to miss late night television than be groggy.
