Chapter 89: The Sealed Sphere

Perspective: Roboute Guilliman

The Ultramarines fleet emerged from the warp above Morag without warning. Thousands of ships formed a ring around the ruined world. Guilliman stood on the bridge of the *Macragge’s Resolve*, watching the shattered continent below. The planet was a wasteland of broken towers and half-buried statues. No signs of life moved through the endless dust.

“Lord Guilliman,” said Captain Severus at his side. “All landing zones are clear. We may proceed.”

Guilliman nodded once. “Send down the strike teams.”

Drop shuttles plunged through the dull orange sky, engines roaring. They landed in a vast courtyard of cracked marble. Ancient walls rose on all sides, their surfaces carved with incomprehensible symbols. The air was thick with dust and silence.

Guilliman led a squad of veteran Ultramarines through the broken gate. His armor glinted in the pale light. His fellow Astartes followed in perfect formation, every step measured. They swept across the courtyard, scanning for threats. There were none. No Kree ambushes. No hostile wildlife. Just silence and the slow drift of sand.

At the far end of the plaza Guilliman paused before a low stone dais. At its center sat the Orb. It was a weathered sphere of metal, about the size of a basketball. Cracks in its surface gave way to a purple glow that pulsed like a heartbeat.

“This is it,” Guilliman said.

“By the Emperor,” whispered Brother Marius. “I have seen this design before.”

Guilliman placed his fist on the Orb’s surface. It hummed with energy but remained still. He stepped back and gestured to his squad.

“Place the containment unit,” he ordered.

Two Ultramarines knelt and unfolded a reinforced crate built for this moment. Inside were power-field emitters and locking clamps. They slid panels around the Orb until it sat in a cradle of humming energy. The purple light dimmed within the metal shell.

“How long before it is secure?” Guilliman asked.

“Thirty seconds and counting,” replied Brother Marius, securing the last clamp.

Guilliman watched the dials and readouts. “Good. No further reaction.”

He turned and scanned the ruins around them. Nothing stirred. No hidden guardians. No traps. The planet had been abandoned long ago by its builders. It waited only for someone worthy to claim its secret.

Once the Orb was locked in its crate, Guilliman gave the command. “Move out.”

The Ultramarines fell back in formation. They carried the containment unit between them as they retraced their steps through the courtyard. Sand swirled in their wake. The Orb’s glow pulsed steadily, contained and silent.

They reached the landing zone just as the shuttles came alive. Guilliman climbed into the lead craft. He nodded to his squad. “Secure the Orb in the vault. Prepare for immediate departure.”

The shuttle’s engines fired. It rose into the sky. The other shuttles followed, lifting the containment crate carefully. In orbit, the fleet reformed around the flagship.

Guilliman stood at the prow as the vault doors on the bridge opened. The Orb’s crate was loaded into its designated cell. The containment fields hummed as the doors sealed.

“Orb secured,” Captain Severus reported. “All systems normal.”

Guilliman looked out at the void. Before him lay the warp path not to Terra, but to the mining world where the Emperor’s seat now waited, the first world opened by the Tesseract Gate, its forges humming with anticipation.

“Set course for the mining world,” he ordered.

“Aye, Lord Guilliman,” came the chorus of voices.

The warp engines roared. Stars stretched into lines of light. Morag fell away, and the Imperium’s prize was bound for its rightful keeper, on the world where the Emperor watched and planned the next grand crusade.
