LITTLE WOMEN (1994) *REACTION* FIRST TIME WATCHING!

I think i am in a minority if really shipping Jo and the professor but I also would have been happy if Jo stayed single and pursued the school as her happy ending

What an excellent reaction, I LOVE this movie and I’m so happy you both finally got a chance to watch it! I’ve always felt that everyone can say they’re a mix of 2 of the 4 March sisters, and it tells me so much about a person by which 2 they think they are most like. I’d love to hear what everyone picks for themselves (mine is Beth and Jo!). 🩷

I am spending some of my Christmas watching my favorite Xmas movie (Scrooged) and one of my favorite classic movies (Little Women) being reacted to by one of my favorite YouTube reaction channels. Happy Holidays! 💕

My take on the queer reading of Jo as a queer woman myself: I read the book when I was young and absolutely loved it. And like you guys, I’ve seen a few cinematic adaptations of it, and this by far is my absolute favorite one. In fact, it’s one of my favorite films of all time and I have revisited it often over the years. And yes, I relate to this Jo very much. First of all, I have also always related a lot to Winona Rider. There’s something about her energy and eccentricity that I believe is similar to mine (I’ve also been compared to her by others as well). This often comes thru in her roles, even though she might sometimes be trying to hold it back, but she seems to have been able to channel a lot of that authentic self into the role, which of course fits perfectly. So a part of Jo’s “otherness” I do believe to not just be queer coded, but to be universal as well. But I also related so much to the particular way Jo’s potential queerness manifests itself in this film. As y’all already know, queerness isn’t a monolith, and each person’s queer identity is made up of distinct, personal elements. Some queer folks are mostly concentrated on their romantic relationships and sexual attractions, with little connection to what role their sexuality and gender play within society and their community. To others, the latter is a very important part of their queerness, and has helped shaped the rejection of conformity to those roles. That is very much a part of my queer identity, and I see that sameness in Jo. Can a heterosexual woman have a similar outlook, behavior and demeanor? Of course! Being a feminist certainly doesn’t make you gay 😂 BUT, I will say that a completely straight woman, especially of the time, likely wouldn’t showcase all of these characteristics quite so boldly and in the same way. As for her relationship with Prof Bhaer, I again go back to my own queerness. Technically speaking lol, my label would be “bisexual.” But I always hated using that, because one, bisexual fetishization, hate and erasure is real, y’all. But more importantly, it doesn’t actually describe me. My attraction to others is not neatly divided into two halves lol. And in fact, if anyone wanted a more specific definition of my sexuality, it would be, “Predominantly romantically and sexually attracted to women, but open to dudes if the right one comes along” 😝. And this is why this adaptation feels the MOST queer to me. We are repeatedly shown that Jo isn’t interested in men at all. Even when her best friend, who is handsome, intelligent, fun, kind, rich and very accepting of her, professes his love, she not only rejects him but appears as though the idea has never even occurred to her. To me, any woman who was predominately attracted to men would at least entertain the notion, and with all of those boxes checked, likely take him up on it. In fact, she likely would have already fallen for him as well. But she doesn’t because in this film, Jo clearly thoroughly knows herself, and doesn’t waver on this at all. However, when she first lays eyes on Prof Bhaer, it appears there is a spark right away. Which again, is interesting because right before that, we’re shown an attractive man closer to her age wink at her, and she only looks uncomfortable. There is a physical chemistry with Bhaer right away, because she appears charmed by him and for the first time, we see Jo actually being flirtatious. And then of course, as they get to know each other, she discovers they are intellectually matched as well. Jo’s “right one” has finally come along. Of course, this doesn’t HAVE to mean that Jo is mostly attracted to women the rest of the time. It could also be read as her being predominantly asexual, and Bhaer is still the one person who connects to the part of her that isn’t. However, considering that Alcott, who never married, literally said the following: “I am more than half persuaded that I am a man’s soul put by some freak of nature into a woman’s body…because I have fallen in love with so many pretty girls and never the least bit with any man.” Well. I’ll let y’all decide which is more likely 😂 Oh and for the record, I like the Greta Gerwig version well enough, but nowhere near as much as this one (obviously lol). I prefer this one stylistically, cinematically, and just the vibes in general. But I also feel like the depiction of Jo’s waffling over Laurie in the Gerwig film and her lack of connection to Bhaer makes it LESS queer specifically and reads more just like how any woman would be hindered by the times and might have to compromise to deal with that.

Fun fact: Samantha Mathis who plays adult Amy is also in American Psycho with Christian Bale, she plays his side piece Courtney.

Winona is so great in this! Would you consider watching Mermaids on the channel? Cher, young Winona and baby Christina Ricci, it's such a classic! 💖

I would absolutely lose my mind if you guys reacted to Romeo & Juliet the 1996 film with Leo DiCaprio & Claire Danes. If yall haven’t seen it I would LOVE a reaction to that!! I grew up being obsessed with that movie (as well as Titanic of course). It is a bit..chaotic, but is sooo good! It’s such a bold, ambitious, & modern take on the classic Shakespeare play. It takes the classic historical story & puts it in modern times but they keep the dialogue the same (Shakespearen dialogue) it is so cool & the acting…my god, some of the best I’ve seen! Consider it?! 😇🫶🏼 Also, as far as Little Women goes, I adore this movie. I LOVE the 2019 film, but there is something about this one (1994) that is so comforting & cozy. I always come back to this one. Maybe it’s because it is the one I grew up with so it feels more special to me♥️
