PAN'S LABYRINTH *REACTION* FIRST TIME WATCHING!
Added 2025-01-15 13:32:36 +0000 UTC
The trees are whispering, the mandrakes are burning, Ofelia is the Princess for which the Petty Pumpkin Patch was yearning!!! We finally watched PAN'S LABYRINTH for the first time and oh my, we were not prepared for the drama and trauma this forest holds just behind its little gate...
Sidenote: we're not exactly sure what happened but part of the bottom of the subtitles got cut off on the screen recording. There's still enough that you can read it so everything should be fine but we do apologize about that ❤️
I love the way it blurs the line between fantasy and reality: was Ofelia truly escaping into a magical afterlife, or was it just her dying mind giving her peace? It’s gut-wrenching but also strangely beautiful. The way Guillermo del Toro contrasts the cold, oppressive real world with the golden warmth of her "return" to the underworld kingdom is pure cinematic poetry.
The extraordinary, the fantastical, the beautiful parts of life are always there, just hidden beneath the surface of all the ugliness and suffering.
10/10 movie and reaction.

When I was a kid watching this I was so pissed off that she ate, but now as I'm older...I get it lol. The whole point of the movie is disobedience and the importance of trusting yourself ("Obey for the sake of obeying" and what not). Before completing the second task, she's gets weirded out by the faun and asks how does she know to trust him, and he doesn't give her a satisfactory answer. During the test, the fairies lead her to the wrong door. She trusts her instincts and picks the right one instead. So if she doesn't trust the faun and cannot trust the fairies, why shouldn't she be allowed the food? Why are you not supposed to eat the food? So she eats and finds out the hard way (tbf, the faun also didn't tell WHY she should not eat, a typical fairytale trope of telling the rules but not explaining WHY). By the end though, she is still able to trust herself over authority figures, succeeding in the final task. Also, we see all three fairies alive at the end, showing that these were just tests, and things like the toad and The Pale Man were just the faun in disguise.
Also I think hunger definitely had something to do with it. She's a kid with a fast metabolism, it's the middle of the night, she's been deprived of dinner the day before, and although she's in a rich family, there's still a war going on, so there's probably been a shortage certain types of foods for them as well. And tbf those grapes DID look delicious lol.

They are perfect films. I'm sad we never got a 3rd film to complete the trilogy.

Blade 2 is basically Hellboy and Hellboy 2 auditions. Luke Goss who plays Jared Nomak also plays Prince Nuada in Hellboy 2.

This movie breaks my heart every single time. Ivana Baquero was incredible. She grew up to be GORGEOUS and was the main actress in The Shannara Chronicles which was awesome but I think only got 1 or 2 seasons sadly.

fun facts, GTD was offered double the budget for the film but only if they shot in English, Ofelia was meant to be younger but 11 year old Ivana Baquero impressed GTD that he made her older, Sergi López playing Vidal was considered a comedic actor so it seems he is playing against type here

I cried all over again. I love this movie!
Yes, I love Doug Jones, he played the faun and the jazz hands eyeball monster. I loved him as Baron Alfanas in “What We Do in the Shadows”
I can’t unsee the nose crushing scene from the beginning . I watched the movie years ago for the first time and it still haunts me.

This was a first time watch for me as well. It was a very beautiful film and I can see why it got the accolades it did, but I am with Wes- this won't be a rewatch for me. It's just too intense. It's going on my "This was a great movie, but I'm never watching it again because my heart can't handle it" list.

I haven’t watched this in years like it’s a good film don’t get me wrong but it’s so emotional and deep that I just can’t watch it constantly

I love Guillermo del Toro. He is one of my favorite directors/writers.
Here are a few suggestions for some Guillermo del Toro directed films for the patch:
Mimic
Blade 2
Hellboy
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
Pacific Rim
The Strain (tv series)
He also wrote the screenplays for the Hobbit films and did some work for Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark.

You all should also check out The Devil's Backbone. An early GDT movie with similar-ish themes to this one.

very pleased to see you two reacting to this film, it is a great one, some speculate whether this was in Ofelia's mind or real, I feel this is real as Ofelia's mums and the Capitain saw the mandrake, Ofelia got out of her room using the chalk

Also now realizing that we said at the end the only GDT movies we've seen are Pinocchio and The Shape of Water totally forgetting we've also seen Nightmare Alley and just did Crimson Peak literally last month on the Patreon lol. We're rusty but we're back!!!
